Chapter 1 - The First Stain

The backyard patio tiles radiated the oppressive heat of a late July afternoon. Standing at the edge of the concrete, fifty-year-old Martha gripped the ribbed plastic of the long black pool vacuum hose. Her short, grey-streaked hair clung to the damp nape of her neck. With a sharp, deliberate jerk of her arms, she emptied the contents of the heavy hose directly into the pristine turquoise water of the pool. A torrent of foul, dark muddy water mixed with rotting oak leaves and black sludge spilled over the surface, instantly staining the deep end a murky brown.

Thirty-five-year-old Julian sprinted across the manicured lawn from the side gate, his dark t-shirt damp with sweat. His face contorted with intense frustration as he slid to a halt beside the pool edge, staring at the ruined water.

“You’re making everything more complicated!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and genuine panic.

Martha spun around on her heel, her hands flying up defensively near her chest, her eyes wide with sudden, sharp surprise.

“Go ahead, hit me!” Martha snapped back, her voice ringing out with raw, defensive fury.

Julian froze, his hands hovering mid-air in sheer disbelief at the accusation. Martha glared at him, her chest heaving as she pointed a trembling, accusation-laden finger directly at his face.

“You think you can control every single drop, don’t you?” Martha hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerous, venomous whisper. “You think burying the truth in the dirt keeps it hidden forever!”

Julian stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he gestured wildly at the murky mess spreading beneath the pool skimmers.

“You didn’t just ruin the pool water,” Julian fired back, his tone dropping into a chilling register. “You just dug up what dad hid under the patio ten years ago.”

Martha’s breath hitched, the color draining entirely from her face. Before she could answer, a loud metallic scrape echoed from beneath the concrete patio tiles right beneath their feet.
