Chapter 5: A Dangerous Gambit

The tension in the living room thickened to a suffocating degree as the encrypted wrist-console beeped twice with a harsh, red error light. The operative holding the device looked up at Sterling, his posture stiffening as he communicated the system's status without speaking a word. Sterling’s hand drifted slowly toward the holster beneath his trench coat, his fingers hovering millimeters away from the grip of a suppressed automatic pistol.

"You clever bastard," Sterling hissed, taking a slow step toward Arthur. "You really built a cage around all of us."

"It's not a cage, Marcus. It's an equalizer," Arthur replied steadily, though a single bead of sweat trickled down the side of his temple. "You walk out of here right now, and the switch remains armed in standby mode. You try anything, and the world finds out about the off-shore black sites before sunrise."

Clara watched the exchange with mounting horror, finally realizing the immense scale of the danger her husband had dragged them into. "Arthur, what is he talking about? What off-shore sites?" she demanded, her voice cracking with betrayal. "You said you were just an internal auditor! You said it was financial fraud!"

"Financial fraud is just the foundation, Clara," Sterling chuckled darkly, turning his attention to her. "Your husband has been auditing the black budget of every intelligence-backed proxy war for the past decade. He knows where the bodies are buried because he’s the one who balanced the ledger for the shovels."

"Is that true?" Clara whispered, turning to Arthur, her eyes searching his face for any sign that the man standing before her was still the husband she thought she knew.

Before Arthur could answer, Maya let out a sharp gasp, pointing a trembling finger toward the large floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the rear patio. Through the dark glass, the faint red glow of a laser designator swept across the patio tiles, followed instantly by the dull thud of heavy ordnance striking the perimeter fence.

"Incoming!" the lead tactical operative shouted, pivoting his weapon toward the glass doors as the entire back wall of the house shattered inward in a blinding cascade of glass, fire, and smoke.
