Chapter 2: Echoes in the Dark

Maya’s small fingers trembled as she slammed the cradle of the wall-mounted telephone down for the third time, the dial tone remaining a flat, mocking hum of dead connectivity. The digital display flickered once before dying entirely, severed by a remote hardline jammer somewhere in the perimeter bushes. In the dim amber glow of the hallway nightlight, she pressed her back hard against the textured wallpaper, trying desperately to muffle the sound of her own ragged breathing.
Across the dark hardwood floor, the heavy shadows shifted. Heavy combat boots stepped silently onto the rug, the rhythmic squeak of rubber soles signaling that the men in black were methodically clearing the perimeter rooms one by one. Maya clamped both hands tightly over her mouth, her dark hair falling forward to shield her tear-streaked face. She could hear the low, metallic drone of tactical communicators murmuring in code—alphanumeric designations and sector coordinates that sounded like a foreign, lethal language.
"Sector two is clean," a flat, mechanical voice whispered near the kitchen threshold. "Target prime and female asset are contained. Sweep the side corridors for the child."
Maya’s heart hammered violently against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at her to bolt toward the basement stairs, but the corridor was completely exposed, a long tunnel of deep shadows illuminated only by the faint moonlight bleeding through the high transom windows. She risked a glance backward, her wide eyes catching the glint of a silencer barrel rounding the corner near the master suite.
Without thinking, she dropped low to the floor, her pink pajama pants scuffing against the baseboard as she scrambled silently beneath the antique mahogany console table. Dust motes danced in the sliver of light cutting across the floorboards. She watched a pair of scarred, heavy-duty tactical boots pause just inches from her hiding spot. The man in black paused, his weapon tracking slowly left and right as his encrypted headset crackled with static.

"Clear out toward the patio," a gravelly voice commanded from the living room. "The boss wants a word with Vance before we wrap this up."
The boots pivoted sharply, the heavy tread moving away down the hall. Maya let out a microscopic sigh of relief, but her blood ran cold when a gloved hand suddenly reached beneath the console table, fingers wrapping securely around the hem of her pajama sleeve.
