Chapter 6

Julian left the study and climbed the grand staircase in silence, the heavy silence of the house pressing against his ears. The hallway on the second floor was dim, illuminated only by the pale afternoon light filtering through the stained-glass window at the landing. When he reached the door of the east nursery, he found it unlocked, a slight breach of his own security protocol that made his jaw tighten.

Inside, Clara sat in a low rocking chair near the window. Lily was fast asleep on the daybed, her breathing deep and even, one small hand clutching the corner of a cream-colored blanket. Clara looked up as Julian entered, the soft rustle of her wedding dress breaking the stillness. The heavy lace train had been draped over a nearby chair, and she had removed her veil, letting her blonde hair fall in soft waves around her shoulders.

"Marcus is downstairs," Julian said flatly, closing the door softly behind him.

"I know," Clara whispered, not looking at him directly, keeping her gaze fixed on the sleeping child. "I heard his cane on the marble in the foyer before he went into your study. He always moves like he owns the place. Which, legally speaking, he almost does."

Julian walked over to the window, standing beside her chair. He looked down at Lily’s peaceful face, wondering how a child could become such a complex weapon in the hands of adults.

"Marcus says Arthur Pendelton is behind the letter," Julian said, watching Clara’s reaction closely. "He thinks Pendelton has the original adoption waivers from Vermont and plans to use them at tomorrow morning's board meeting."

Clara’s hands, which had been resting quietly in her lap, clenched into tight fists against the silk of her dress. She closed her eyes for a long moment, taking a slow, shaky breath. When she opened them, the vulnerability was gone, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve that matched Julian's own.

"Marcus is right about Pendelton," Clara admitted, her voice barely a breath. "And he’s right that I didn't tell you the whole truth about how those documents ended up in Vermont."

Julian turned his body slightly toward her, his tone dangerously calm. "Then it’s time you told me, Clara. Right now. No omissions, no half-truths."

"Three years ago, when my brother passed away, he didn't just leave debt behind; he left a trail of illegal land acquisitions in northern Maine and Vermont," Clara confessed, her eyes finally meeting his with unflinching honesty. "Arthur Pendelton was his primary financial backer. When the scandal broke, Pendelton helped us bury Lily’s identity in the foster system to keep the state auditors from seizing our family assets. He kept the master file as an insurance policy against us."

"And you thought he would just forget about it because we got married?" Julian asked, incredulity sharp in his voice.

"I thought we had bought enough time to relocate the files," Clara said defensively, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself and glanced nervously at the sleeping child. "Pendelton didn't just want money, Julian. He wanted Vance-Thorne Real Estate. This wedding was supposed to consolidate our power so we could buy him out permanently. We just ran out of time."
