Chapter 3

The ride back to the Vance estate on the outskirts of Boston was silent, save for the hum of the luxury sedan’s engine and Lily’s soft, exhausted breathing as she drifted off to sleep against Julian’s shoulder. Outside, the New England landscape blurred into a gray smear of rain-slicked pavement and looming pine trees. Julian stared out the tinted window, his reflection ghostly against the passing scenery. His mind raced through a mental ledger of business rivals, disgruntled former partners, and people who knew enough about the Vermont estate to piece the puzzle together.

When the car finally rolled through the wrought-iron gates of the Vance property, the vast Georgian mansion looked less like a home and more like a fortress. There were no welcoming lights, no staff waiting on the cobblestone driveway to congratulate the newlyweds. Julian had given the domestic staff the day off to ensure absolute privacy during the wedding preparations, a decision that now felt like a tactical error.

Julian stepped out into the mist, carefully lifting Lily from the plush leather interior. The damp air carried the sharp scent of wet earth and impending autumn. Clara followed him closely, her heavy lace train gathered awkwardly in her arms, dragging slightly against the wet gravel. She looked exhausted, the heavy makeup around her eyes smudged slightly from unshed tears.

"Take her upstairs to the east nursery," Julian instructed without looking back as he unlocked the heavy oak front door. "Lock the doors behind you. I need to check the security logs."

"Julian, you don't think someone was actually in the house?" Clara asked, her voice tight with rising anxiety as she stepped into the dimly lit foyer.

"I think nothing is secure anymore," Julian replied, setting Lily down on the runner rug and letting the child take his hand. "The letter didn't arrive by mail, Clara. It was handed to Lily by someone who had access to the cathedral sacristy. That means someone on our payroll, or someone very close to us, is playing a double game."

While Clara carried the sleepy little girl up the grand staircase, Julian walked briskly toward his private study at the back of the house. The room smelled of old leather, cigar smoke, and polished mahogany. He bypassed his desk and walked straight to the wall-mounted panel controlling the estate’s closed-circuit security system. He punched in his master override code, bringing up the playback files from the previous twenty-four hours.

The screen flickered to life, showing multiple camera angles of the empty foyer, the perimeter gates, and the rear gardens. Julian skipped forward through the empty hours of the morning, looking for anomalies. At 8:15 AM, just an hour before they had departed for the cathedral, a dark sedan had pulled up to the service entrance near the kitchens. A figure in a dark raincoat stepped out, slipped through the unlocked delivery door, and vanished into the interior hallways for precisely four minutes before leaving.

Julian’s breath hitched. The intruder hadn't stolen anything. They had placed something inside Lily’s small vanity case, which had been packed for the post-wedding reception. The intruder knew the exact schedule, the exact routines, and the exact psychological pressure points required to break Julian and Clara apart before they even said 'I do.'
