Chapter 9

The interior of the federal sedan smelled faintly of sterile leather and ozone. Clara sat on the edge of the back seat, holding Leo tightly in her lap while the boy sobbed quietly into her chest. In the front seat, Marshal Davies stared intently at a glowing tablet screen, her fingers flying across the glass interface as she reviewed a cascade of financial transactions and structural blueprints.

"Containment protocol active at sector four," Davies muttered into a comms mic clipped to her lapel. "Subject Sterling is in custody. Vault B key secured by investigator Vance. Moving secondary targets to the federal annex for processing."

Clara stared out the tinted window as the sedan rolled away from the park, leaving the wooden pavilion and the rusted playground behind. The grey afternoon sky seemed to press down on the city like a lead weight. Nothing about this made sense. Arthur was a corrupt developer, yes, but he was an old man who cared about his business legacy—he wouldn't intentionally collapse an overpass just to cash out insurance claims. There was a bigger piece missing, a deeper conspiracy that involved figures far more powerful than a local municipal board.

"Mommy, where are we going?" Leo sniffled, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with the sleeve of his grey t-shirt.

"We're going to talk to some people, sweetie," Clara said softly, forcing a shaky smile onto her face even though her stomach was churning with terror. "We'll be home soon, I promise."

"The man said we can't go home," Leo whispered, his wide grey eyes looking up at her with heartbreaking clarity. "He said our house has yellow tape all over the door."

Clara swallowed hard, a lump forming in her throat that felt as hard as a stone. She looked back out the window just as the car passed the old municipal water plant. The gates were wide open, surrounded by multiple black-and-white police cruisers and men in heavy hazmat gear carrying sealed aluminum canisters.

Before she could process the terrifying implication of the hazmat suits, the sedan’s radio crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by a frantic voice: "Marshal Davies, report! Vault B has just been compromised! The secondary seal was broken from the inside before Vance reached the door!"

Davies slammed her hand onto the dashboard, her calm demeanor evaporating instantly. She hit the accelerator, throwing the sedan into a violent U-turn that made the tires shriek against the wet asphalt.
