Chapter 13

Everyone froze. Marshal Davies drew her service weapon, pointing it downward at the shaft entrance, while Investigator Vance reached for his flashlight, blindingly illuminating the ladder.

Tracey emerged over the lip of the iron hatch, her bare feet muddy and her face smudged with soot, but otherwise unharmed. She wasn't crying. Her small dark eyes were wide and steady, carrying an unnatural, chilling calm that didn't belong to a five-year-old child. In her right hand, she clutched the silver locket she had managed to retrieve, and slung over her small shoulder was a heavy military-grade flash drive attached to a lanyard.

"Tracey!" Clara gasped, taking a desperate step forward, but the man in the grey suit raised a single hand, stopping her instantly.

"Don't move, Mrs. Hayes," the man warned softly, his eyes locked entirely on the little girl climbing out of the dark.

Tracey stepped fully onto the grass, ignoring the federal agents, the police cruisers, and the stunned faces of the adults surrounding her. She walked with slow, deliberate steps straight toward Leo, who was still cradled in Clara’s arms.

"You dropped this," Tracey whispered softly, holding out the heavy military flash drive toward Leo as if it were nothing more than a lost plastic toy.

Leo slowly reached out and took the drive, his small fingers closing over the cold metal casing. The second his skin made contact with the casing, a distant klaxon began to wail from beneath the park, and every single emergency light on the federal vehicles flashed in unison.

"Security handshake complete," an automated synthesized voice echoed from a small hidden speaker embedded in the pavilion roof. "Primary data transfer initiated. Sector four unlocked."

Marshal Davies spun around, pointing her weapon at the man in the grey suit. "What is this? What did you just trigger?"

The man didn't flinch. He smiled faintly, adjusting his tie once more as he looked at Tracey, then at Leo. "It’s not a data breach, Marshal. It’s a full audit reset. Every illegal transaction, every falsified permit, and every hidden account across the entire municipal district has just been mirrored onto two secure drives—one held by each child."

Arthur slammed his fists against the cruiser glass from inside, shouting in sudden panic. "You lied to me! You said the board would grant amnesty if we wiped the mainframes!"

May you like

"Amnesty is for people who break the rules, Arthur," the man in the grey suit replied coldly. "You built a cage out of municipal fraud, and you thought your grandchildren were the locks. But locks can be opened from both sides."

Clara dropped to her knees on the damp grass, pulling Tracey into her arms alongside Leo, holding both children tightly against her chest as the wailing klaxons slowly faded into a low, humming silence.
