Chapter 5

The silence that followed Ryan’s confirmation was heavy and suffocating, broken only by the soft, steady breathing of little Lily, who had finally drifted off to sleep against Clara’s shoulder. Arthur slowly leaned back into his high-backed leather chair, the fight temporarily draining from his rigid frame, leaving him looking every bit of his sixty-five years. He had survived corporate scandals, hostile takeovers, and regulatory investigations by playing the long game, but he had never accounted for an internal mutiny fueled by domestic desperation.

“What do you want, Clara?” Arthur asked quietly, his voice losing its booming executive resonance, replaced by the gravelly tone of an old strategist assessing an unwinable tactical position. He recognized that intimidation tactics were completely useless now; the leverage had decisively shifted across the table.

Clara gently shifted Lily, sliding her arm out to support the sleeping child more comfortably while keeping her left shoulder turned slightly away from Julian to hide the ugly bruise. She looked at her father-in-law, seeing not the terrifying patriarch who had ruled her household with an iron fist, but a cornered man whose empire was built entirely on sand.

“I want a clean break, Arthur,” Clara said, her voice unwavering. “Full custody of Lily, unencumbered by your legal team’s intimidation tactics or your threats of financial ruin. And I want the coastal house signed over to my name as a settlement for the years of emotional and physical damage your son has inflicted under this very roof.”

Julian exploded, the word settlement breaking his fragile restraint completely. “The coastal house? Are you insane? That property is worth millions! It’s mine—it’s our family’s legacy!” He took a furious step toward Clara, his hand raised in a menacing gesture, forgetting for a split second that Ryan was still listening on the other end of the line and that his father was watching his every move.

“Julian!” Arthur barked the command with enough force to stop his son dead in his tracks. The older man’s eyes were cold and calculating as he weighed the options. A public scandal involving embezzlement and domestic abuse would destroy the family holding company overnight, wiping out their stock value and triggering criminal investigations that could land both him and Julian in federal prison. Handing over a single property and granting a quiet divorce was not a defeat; it was a necessary containment strategy.

“Listen to me, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. “Sit down, keep your mouth shut, and let us handle this like businessmen instead of animals.”

Clara watched the silent calculation passing between father and son, her finger resting lightly on the end-call button. She knew they were dangerous, but she also knew they were cornered rats.
