Chapter 13

The tempered glass of the security keypad shattered in a shower of bright white sparks as the heavy fire extinguisher slammed into it. The internal wiring hissed, smoked violently, and then sparked into a chaotic rhythm of flashing amber and red lights.

For a terrifying second, nothing happened. The heavy steel door remained locked, its internal magnetic seals holding firm against the damage.

"It didn't work," Clara murmured, clutching her injured wrist tighter as the sound of running footsteps grew dangerously close down the corridor.

Julian didn't hesitate. He jammed the metal nozzle of the fire extinguisher directly into the smoking cavity of the ruined keypad and squeezed the primary release valve. A high-pressure blast of dry chemical powder shot straight into the electronic housing, triggering a massive electrical short-circuit throughout the door's internal relay system.

With a loud, pneumatic groan, the magnetic locks disengaged. The heavy steel door popped outward by half an inch, the rubber seals hissing as equalized air pressure rushed between the two spaces.

"Go!" Julian shouted, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her through the gap just as the door swung fully open into the blindingly bright server room beyond.

They tumbled inside, and Julian immediately slammed the emergency manual override button on the inside wall, dropping a thick steel deadbolt into place just as a barrage of heavy fists began hammering against the exterior of the door.

"We're locked in," Clara panted, leaning against a towering rack of humming black server towers. "Julian... we actually made it inside."

Julian looked around the expansive, climate-controlled chamber. Rows upon rows of high-speed servers blinked with steady blue and green lights, humming quietly in the chilled air. In the center of the room sat a massive glass-enclosed console displaying a holographic interface—the master terminal of the entire corporate network.

He rushed over to the console, but his heart sank instantly. The main screen was locked behind an encrypted countdown timer, flashing in bold red letters: Data Wipe in Progress: 3 Minutes remaining.

"They triggered a remote purge the second Marcus went down," Julian said, his voice dropping in despair as he stared at the rapidly decreasing numbers on the screen. "If that timer hits zero, every file, every record, every piece of evidence of the environmental dumping and embezzlement will be wiped clean from existence."

Clara limped over to the console, her brown eyes scanning the complex command lines scrolling across the auxiliary monitor. "There's a hard-line bypass," she said, her fingers flying over the physical keyboard with surprising speed despite her injured wrist. "An emergency manual backup port. But it requires a dual physical verification... a signature from both an auditor and a lead medical researcher."

Julian looked at her, the realization dawning in his eyes. He didn't hesitate. He pulled his employee badge from his lapel, tapped it against the scanner, and reached out his hand. Clara placed her uninjured palm right beside his on the dual biometric sensor pad.
