Chapter 1

The bright, sterile light of the grand hallway did little to warm the cold marble beneath Clara’s back. At thirty years old, she had spent a decade navigating hospital floors, but this private research wing of the facility felt entirely different. Her blue scrubs felt tight against her skin, and the red wristband indicating high-security access seemed to mock her current helplessness. A few inches away, a metallic medical tray lay overturned, its contents scattered alongside a puddle of bright, viscous yellow liquid that smelled faintly of industrial machine oil rather than any recognized pharmaceutical.
Julian, dressed in his sharp dark suit and white collared shirt, hurried down the grand staircase. At forty, his face usually carried the calm, unreadable mask of a corporate executive, but right now, panic flickered in his dark eyes. He reached the bottom and immediately dropped to his knees beside her, his breath coming in short, controlled gasps.
"Where are you hurt?" Julian asked, his voice tight with restrained urgency.
Clara winced, her brown hair splayed across the stone. She tried to shift her weight, but a sharp wave of nausea hit her. "Don’t move me," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the HVAC system.
"Tell me what happened, Clara. Did someone push you?" Julian pressed, leaning closer.
"Wrist and head," she managed to reply, her eyes fluttering shut for a brief second before she forced them open.
Julian extended a hand to steady her, but his fingers brushed against the spilled yellow liquid. He paused, rubbed his thumb against his index finger, and lifted his hand to the light. The thick, golden-brown fluid glistened under the recessed fixtures.
"This is oil," Julian said, the realization hitting him with the force of a physical blow. His professional composure fractured, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization that this was no ordinary accident.
He whipped his head up toward the top of the grand staircase, where Walter stood silhouetted against the blinding light of the upper landing, his dark shirt blending into the shadows.

"Walter! Lock the door!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the marble walls with desperate intensity.
Walter didn't move for three agonizing seconds, his dark eyes fixed on them from above before his hand slowly reached for the heavy brass deadbolt.
