Chapter 3

The blue glow of the television screen illuminated the hard lines of Julian Vance’s face as the recorded evidence played out in agonizing detail. On the display, the digital timestamp marked three hours prior to the current confrontation. The camera angle inside the master dressing room was crystal clear, capturing the inner sanctum where Eleanor kept her most prized possessions, including the heirloom diamond set gifted by her late father.
Julian watched, mesmerized and horrified, as the figure of Eleanor stepped into the frame of the dressing room camera. Her updo was immaculate, but her movements lacked their usual haughty grace; they were jerky, desperate, and deliberate. She spun the combination dial of the hidden wall safe with practiced ease, retrieved the heavy velvet jewelry box, and tucked it deep inside the lining of a winter coat stored at the back of the cedar closet.
The footage then skipped forward to show Eleanor intentionally dropping a single diamond earring onto the polished floorboards of the servants' quarters, directly beneath the coat rack where Clara typically hung her outdoor jacket. It was a crude, malicious plant, executed with the cold calculation of someone who viewed human lives as disposable commodities.
Julian’s stomach churned. He reached up, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes as if he could physically erase the images from his mind. He had known Eleanor was ambitious, proud, and occasionally cruel, but he had never suspected she possessed this level of sociopathic cunning. Why would a woman of immense wealth stage the theft of her own jewelry?

The answer loomed dark and heavy in the back of Julian’s mind: debt. Despite the illusion of limitless fortune, the Vance family investments had been hemorrhaging capital for over a year. Eleanor’s high-society lifestyle, her extravagant galas, and her compulsive acquisitions had quietly drained their liquid accounts. The insurance payout from a stolen heirloom diamond set would provide a temporary lifeline, a way to settle her most aggressive creditors without admitting financial ruin to Julian or their peers. And Clara, a quiet orphan from a rural town working to put her younger brother through college, was the ideal sacrifice—friendless, vulnerable, and easy to intimidate.
Julian dropped his hands, his eyes hardening as he stared back at the screen. The flickering light caught the reflection of his black suit, making him look like a phantom trapped in his own expensive prison. The cowardice he had felt moments ago in the living room vanished, replaced by a cold, searing anger. He turned away from the fireplace, his jaw set. The illusion was over. It was time to return to the grand room and confront the monster living in his bed, but this time, he carried the ultimate weapon of truth.
