Chapter 1

The amber light from the massive crystal chandelier fractured across the cold marble floor of the grand living room, casting long, wavering shadows that seemed to mock the chaos unfolding beneath it. Eleanor Vance stood rigid in her sparkling gold gown, an intricate masterpiece of fabric and vanity that hugged her frame like molten metal. Her knuckles were white, locked around the worn leather handle of a riding whip. At her feet, Clara, the young maid dressed in a modest brown and beige uniform, knelt in absolute terror. Clara’s hair, usually neatly tied back, had come loose in strands that stuck to her tear-streaked face.
"You stole my diamond jewelry! I didn't take it! Please believe me!" Clara’s voice cracked, vibrating with a raw, desperate fear that echoed through the high-ceilinged room. Her hands hovered over the polished stone, trembling violently as she braced herself for an impact that felt inevitable.
Eleanor’s chest heaved beneath the heavy gold sequins. Her nostrils flared, and a dark fury twisted her usually composed features into something grotesque. Without a word of reasoned debate, Eleanor let out a sharp, feral scream of pure rage. Her arm snapped forward with vicious velocity, the leather whip whistling through the air as she brought it down toward the kneeling girl.

Across the room, Julian Vance—Eleanor’s husband, dressed impeccably in a tailored black suit and black tie—jerked backward in sheer disbelief. His eyes widened, reflecting the ugly violence of the moment. Instead of stepping forward to intervene, a survival instinct took over. Julian spun on his heel, his leather-soled shoes slapping sharply against the marble, and bolted toward the arched hallway.
He didn't run to save Clara from the stinging leather, nor did he run to restrain his wife. Julian ran because the sudden violence had triggered a lingering suspicion in his mind. The security system in the Vance estate was extensive, recording every square foot of the main house. If Clara was innocent, as her desperate eyes suggested, then the accusation held a fatal flaw. Julian needed proof, and he needed it immediately. He rushed down the shadowy hallway, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The Vance household was built on a foundation of elite luxury, but beneath the polished surface, rot was spreading rapidly, and Julian intended to find the exact source of the infection before it consumed them all.
