Chapter 8: Digital Evidence and Dangerous Truths

The laptop screen cast a harsh, blue-tinted glow across the small kitchen, illuminating the tense expressions of the three occupants. Lines of code, encrypted file trees, and audio logs scrolled down the display at a dizzying speed. Elena’s fingers danced across the keyboard with practiced precision, tapping out commands that bypassed firewall after firewall.
"Look here," Elena whispered, tapping the screen with a slender finger. "This is the audio log pulled from the precinct dispatch servers twenty minutes after your little incident on the sidewalk, Officer Miller."
She clicked a play button. A burst of static hissed from the laptop speakers before Captain Vance’s gruff voice echoed clearly through the quiet apartment.
“I don't care how you do it, just make sure Miller is tied up with internal affairs until Friday,” Vance’s recorded voice said, speaking to an unidentified recipient. “If he starts talking about the 2020 warehouse files, the whole city council goes down with him. Plant whatever you need to in his locker. Just bury him.”
Miller stared at the screen, a cold numbness settling deep into his bones. Vance wasn't just trying to save face; he was actively framing him to protect a criminal syndicate that reached the highest levels of municipal government. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical blow ever could. Six years of loyal service, countless double shifts, missed holidays, and scars earned on the mean streets—all traded away like cheap poker chips to save a politician's career.
"They're coming for you, Thomas," Nikolai said softly, stepping closer to the window and peering through the blinds down into the dark alley. "Vance isn't going to wait until Friday. Once they realize Elena has mirrored their off-site servers, they'll realize we have the complete picture. They'll clean house tonight."
"What do we do?" Miller asked, the last vestiges of his old life burning away in the harsh light of the laptop screen. He wasn't a suspended cop anymore; he was a target.
"We take the evidence straight to federal authorities," Elena said firmly, unplugging the flash drive and slipping it into her jacket pocket. "The FBI field office downtown has an anti-corruption task force that hasn't been compromised by the city council. If we hand them the mirrored database and the physical ledgers Nikolai recovered, they'll have no choice but to raid the precinct."
"Federal jurisdiction takes days to authorize a warrant," Miller countered, shaking his head. "By the time they get the paperwork signed, Vance and his cronies will have wiped the servers, burned the precinct archives, and put us in the ground."

"Then we don't wait for a warrant," Nikolai said, turning away from the window. His ice-blue eyes met Miller's with absolute, unyielding resolve. "We give them something they can't ignore. We walk through the front doors of the Federal Building tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp, broadcast the audio logs live to every independent media outlet in the state, and let public outrage force their hand."
Rex let out a sudden, sharp bark, his ears snapping back toward the apartment door. Down in the hallway, the faint sound of heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed against the concrete floor—approaching fast.
