Chapter 11: Confrontation in the Depths

The harsh glare of the SUV headlights cast long, distorted shadows across the wet concrete floor of the subterranean garage. Miller peeked around the edge of the thick concrete support pillar, his eyes locked on Captain Vance. The man he had respected and taken orders from for six years was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal willing to burn down the entire department to protect his own skin.
"It's over, Sean," Miller shouted back, his voice echoing off the low ceiling. "Elena mirrored the precinct servers. The federal task force has the complete audio logs and the 2020 manifests. Even if you kill us here, the truth is already out."
Vance let out a harsh, dry laugh that lacked any humor. "The feds don't have a damn thing until a grand jury indicts us, Tom. And grand juries take weeks. Weeks I don't have, but nights like tonight are wonderfully efficient."
Vance took two slow steps forward, keeping his weapon trained squarely on the pillar. Two other armed operatives flanked him, stepping out from the shadows near the rear of the SUV, their rifles raised and ready to fire.
Miller’s mind raced. They were outgunned, trapped between a dead-end utility tunnel and a firing squad led by a man holding all the institutional power in the city. He looked down at Rex. The German Shepherd was crouching low, his muscles coiled like steel springs, letting out a low, vibrating growl that hummed in the damp air. Beside him, Nikolai stood completely still, his pale eyes fixed on Vance with an intensity that seemed to transcend the immediate danger.
"You think you won, Captain," Nikolai spoke up, his voice cutting through the hum of the garage ventilation. "You think buying off politicians and silencing cops erases the blood on those shipping manifests."
Vance sneered, shifting his gaze toward the older man. "And who the hell are you? Just another vagrant who wandered into the wrong alley."
"I am the man who watched your men burn my family's warehouse down four years ago," Nikolai said softly, stepping out from behind the pillar into the dim light.
Vance froze for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing as he studied Nikolai's scarred face and weathered features. Recognition flickered briefly in Vance's eyes, replaced immediately by sudden, cold realization. "You... you were the dock supervisor. The one who smuggled the manifests out through the back gates before the fire."
"And I left a token for you," Nikolai said, lifting his right hand.
On Nikolai's middle finger gleamed a twin silver skull ring, catching the harsh white glare of the SUV headlights and shining with a deep, ruby-red glint.
Vance’s face lost all color. The bravado vanished in an instant, replaced by sudden panic. "Kill them. Kill them all right now!" he screamed, raising his pistol to fire.

Before Vance’s finger could squeeze the trigger, Nikolai whistled—a sharp, piercing double-note that echoed like a whipcrack through the garage.
Rex surged forward from the shadows like a bolt of lightning, ignoring the gunfire that chipped the concrete at his paws, and launched himself directly at Captain Vance.
