Chapter 4 - A House Divided

The tension in the grand hallway reached a suffocating peak. Eleanor’s eyes narrowed as she looked past Julian to lock onto Clara with undisguised contempt. The decades of absolute power that defined the Vance matriarch radiated off her, turning the air cold.

“Spare me the sentimental drivel, girl,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping an octave. “In our world, blood is only valuable when it preserves the estate. A bastard child born to a domestic worker has no place in the Vance lineage. You knew the rules when you took this position.”

“I never agreed to sign away my child,” Clara shot back, her voice ringing clear and steady in the vast space.

“You signed an employment contract containing a standard morality clause,” Eleanor retorted smoothly. “Breach of contract forfeits all severance and initiates immediate termination. Security is outside waiting to escort you off the premises.”

Julian stepped forward, his face flushed with a fury his mother rarely saw. “She is not going anywhere. If Clara leaves this house, I leave with her. I’ll resign from the board, liquidate my personal assets, and walk away from this gilded prison tonight.”

Eleanor paused, her expression hardening as she calculated the threat. For a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her polished features before vanishing behind her impenetrable mask.

“You would throw away a billion-dollar empire for a maid?” Eleanor asked, her tone dripping with disbelief.

“It’s not just a maid, Mother. It’s my family,” Julian said, his voice unwavering.

Clara looked at Julian, her heart skipping a beat as she realized the magnitude of what he was sacrificing for her and the unborn child. The cold distance between them evaporated, replaced by a fragile, terrifying solidarity.

“Think very carefully about this, Julian,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “If you walk out that door with her, you don’t just lose your seat. I will ensure you are legally disowned, blacklisted from every financial institution in the country, and stripped of every penny bearing the Vance name.”

“Do it,” Julian said without hesitation.

Before Eleanor could respond, the heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the hall swung open with a loud bang, revealing a figure standing in the freezing rain outside.
