Chapter 11 - Sirens in the Snow

The wail of police sirens pierced the winter night, echoing sharply against the stone walls of the grand estate. Blue and red flashing lights painted the grand hallway in erratic, violent strokes, reflecting off the crystal chandelier and casting long, dancing shadows across the marble floor.

Julian frowned, turning toward the heavy front doors. “Police? We didn't call the police.”

“I did,” Thomas Miller said quietly, stepping forward with his phone still clutched in his rough hand. He looked directly at Eleanor and Victoria. “Extortion, illegal foreclosure threats, and corporate espionage involving forged municipal documents. That’s a federal offense, not just a family dispute.”

Eleanor’s composure finally fractured. A flicker of genuine panic crossed her face as she stepped toward the front doors. “You called federal marshals to my home? Have you completely lost your mind?”

“No, Mrs. Vance, I just decided to play by rules you couldn't manipulate,” Thomas replied, his voice unwavering.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open wide, admitting a gust of freezing wind and two officers in tactical winter uniforms, followed by a federal investigator holding a warrant clipboard. The lead investigator scanned the opulent room, his eyes lingering on the broken tablet screen and the historical documents still resting on the side table.

“Eleanor Vance?” the investigator asked, stepping forward with an air of absolute authority.

Eleanor stood her ground, lifting her chin with what remained of her aristocratic pride. “I am Eleanor Vance. You are making a massive mistake stepping foot on this property without consulting my legal team.”

“Your legal team was notified twenty minutes ago, ma’am,” the investigator replied smoothly, holding up the open warrant. “You’re being detained for questioning regarding financial fraud, land manipulation, and obstruction of justice.”

Victoria stepped back instinctively, quietly sliding her leather briefcase behind a marble pillar as if distancing herself from the matriarch. “I am merely an independent board member, Officer. I had nothing to do with historical land acquisitions.”

“We’ll verify everyone’s involvement at the station,” the investigator said, nodding to the uniformed officers.

Two officers stepped past Julian and Clara, moving directly toward the matriarch. For a brief second, Eleanor locked eyes with Julian. There was no apology in her gaze, only a cold, chilling reminder of the world they both inhabited.

“You’ll regret this, Julian,” Eleanor said softly as the cold steel of handcuffs clicked around her wrists. “You can’t survive outside this family. You’re a Vance.”

“I’m done being a Vance,” Julian whispered back, refusing to look away.

As the police led the matriarch out into the blinding snow, Richard picked up his scotch glass, took one final sip, and shook his head with a cynical smile.
