Chapter 14

Two weeks later, the MegaMart parking lot looked almost peaceful under the bright afternoon sun. The rows of aluminum shopping carts were neatly corralled, the asphalt swept clean of debris, and the steady hum of suburban life had returned to its normal, rhythmic pulse.

Arthur Stromtron stood near the cart return, wearing a brand-new, unblemished blue vest over a crisp white shirt. His nametag still bore his last name, but the plastic felt lighter on his chest today. MegaMart corporate had undergone a sweeping "leadership transition" following the federal raids, and the new management team had reinstated Arthur with back pay and a formal letter of commendation for his cooperation with federal investigators—though the official company memo conveniently omitted the part about the covert police conspiracy.

A sleek, unmarked sedan pulled quietly into the parking stall near the cart corral. The passenger-side window rolled down smoothly, revealing Detective Elena Reyes wearing a simple dark jacket over her civilian clothes, her expression calm and approachable.

Arthur paused in his work, walking over to the driver’s side with a tentative, hesitant smile. "Detective Reyes. I didn't expect to see you around here again."

"I was in the neighborhood," Elena said gently, opening the car door and stepping out onto the asphalt. "I wanted to make sure you were settling back in okay. I heard management gave you a promotion to shift supervisor."

Arthur chuckled, running a hand through his short hair. "Yeah, they did. Turns out when the corrupt executives are all indicted by the DOJ, the corporate office suddenly develops a keen interest in honest warehouse management. Who would have thought?"

Elena smiled warmly, the lines of stress and exhaustion that had defined her face weeks ago finally replaced by a quiet, settled peace. "Honesty is a rare commodity these days, Arthur. The federal prosecutors told me your testimony was the final piece that cemented the entire racketeering case against Vance and his associates."

"I just did what I should have done from the beginning," Arthur said softly, looking down at his shoes before meeting her eyes again. "How's Sarah? Is she back at college?"

"She's back in the dorms, focusing on her finals," Elena replied, her maternal pride evident in her voice. "And she's sleeping a lot better, knowing the people who targeted our family are facing federal time instead of walking the halls with badges."

"That's good," Arthur breathed, a genuine sense of relief washing over him. "That's real good."
