Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on the asphalt of the MegaMart parking lot, turning the rows of parked cars into shimmering mirages of heat and tension. Arthur Stromtron stood with his boots planted firmly near the aluminum cart corral, his fingers gripping the small, heat-sealed foil packet with a mixture of righteous anger and deep discomfort. His blue store vest, worn tight over a crisp white shirt, felt suddenly stifling. On his chest, the plastic nametag bearing the name "Stromtron" caught the glare of the blinding light. Across from him stood Elena Reyes, a fifty-year-old Hispanic woman whose dark jacket over a pink blouse had suddenly become the center of a very public, very ugly universe.

Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs, not out of fear, but from the grim satisfaction of a civic duty fulfilled. He had watched her slip the packet into her pocket near the baking aisle ten minutes prior, his sharp eyes missing nothing. When she had walked past the registers without paying, he had followed her outside, tracking her every move with the methodical precision of a man who took his minimum-wage job far too seriously.

"What is this?" Arthur demanded, his voice carrying just enough authority to draw the wandering eyes of passing shoppers.

Elena stared at the object in his hand, her face draining of color until her olive skin looked like old parchment. Her eyes widened, rimmed with a sudden, sharp terror that seemed entirely disproportionate to a simple shoplifting accusation.

"That's not mine!" Elena gasped, her breath hitching in the dry parking lot air.

Arthur shook his head, holding his ground near the rusted shopping carts. He had seen every trick in the book, every amateur performance designed to deflect blame. The denial was predictable, almost pathetic.

"You're in serious trouble," Arthur replied, his tone hardening into a flat, unyielding judgment.

Onlookers began to slow their pace, whispering behind cupped hands. Elena pressed her palms together in a desperate plea, her shoulders trembling under the heavy fabric of her dark jacket.

"Please... I'm just picking up for my daughter," she whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, maternal panic that hung heavily in the humid air.

Without warning, Elena’s hand darted into her shoulder bag. Arthur braced himself, half-expecting a weapon or another package. Instead, she withdrew a heavy metallic shield, flashing a gleaming police badge directly into his face.

"What did you just try to do?" Detective Elena Reyes asked, her voice dropping an octave into absolute, freezing authority. Arthur’s world tilted on its axis.
