Chapter 10: Sirens in the Suburbs

The wail of the police siren cut through the cool night air, growing louder until it parked directly outside the house, flooding the well-lit living room with strobing red and blue flashes. The white floral wreaths cast long, distorted shadows across the walls as the front door swung wide open, revealing two local police officers with their hands resting cautiously on their holstered sidearms.

""Freeze! Stay right where you are!"" the lead officer commanded, his eyes darting quickly from Leo holding the brass candlestick to Maria standing frozen amidst the scattered pearls, and finally to Arthur, who was wrapped in a blanket on the sofa, coughing weakly.

""Officer, thank God,"" Leo said, lowering the candlestick and stepping forward. ""She tried to murder my father. He’s right here. They put him in that box.""

The second officer stepped inside, his gaze locking onto the open mahogany coffin with its torn interior lining and the heavy saw resting on the floor beside it. The grim reality of the scene needed no explanation.

""Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back,"" the lead officer instructed Maria, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs clicking in the sterile air.

Maria didn't resist. All the fierce, cold calculation had drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking remarkably small and defeated. She offered no defense as the cold metal clamped around her wrists, her silk robe rustling softly as she was led away toward the flashing squad car waiting in the driveway.

As the front door closed behind them, muffling the hum of the police cruiser, the living room fell into a profound, exhausted quiet.

Paramedics rushed through the door moments later with a medical kit and a stretcher, crowding around Arthur to check his vitals, administer oxygen, and inspect the rope burns on his wrists. Leo stood by the edge of the sofa, watching the medical professionals work with a steady, watchful eye, ensuring his father was finally safe.

""His blood pressure is stabilizing,"" the paramedic announced, shining a small penlight into Arthur’s eyes. ""He’s dehydrated and exhausted, but he’s going to be okay. We need to get him to the hospital for a full evaluation, though.""

Arthur reached out, his hand grasping Leo’s forearm with surprising strength. ""You stayed,"" Arthur whispered, his voice thick with emotion. ""You didn't believe them.""

""I knew something was wrong from the start,"" Leo replied, a ghost of a smile touching his lips for the first time in days. ""I wasn't going to let them take you away, Dad.""

The paramedics gently lifted Arthur onto the stretcher, wheeling him past the floral wreaths and the empty coffin that had almost become his tomb. Leo walked beside them, his hand resting securely on his father's shoulder, guiding him out of the house that had nearly become a crime scene, ready to face whatever came next together.
