Chapter 1: The Sealed Lid

The heavy scent of white lilies hung oppressively in the warm living room, mixing with the metallic tang of damp earth and polished wood. Sixteen-year-old Leo stared at the dark mahogany box, his knuckles white as he pressed them against the cold, gleaming handle. The gold hardware winked mockingly under the soft chandelier light. His black suit felt suddenly too tight, constricting his chest as a jagged sob tore from his throat.

""Dad!"" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing desperation that rattled the framed photographs on the mantelpiece.

He leaned forward, his forehead resting against the cool lid of the coffin, desperate to feel any vibration of life from within. His mind raced backward through the past forty-eight hours, trying to piece together the sudden, impossible tragedy. Only yesterday, his father had been fixing the kitchen sink, laughing at a bad joke, strong and vibrant. Now, there was only this terrifying silence, broken only by the ragged sound of Leo’s own breathing.

A soft rustle of fabric signaled movement beside him. Maria, forty-five, stepped into his peripheral vision, her dark dress whispering against the carpet. Her pearl necklace rose and fell with her measured, cautious breaths. As Leo reached blindly for the latch, desperate to peel back the polished wood and verify the nightmare, Maria’s hand descended onto his trembling shoulder. Her grip was firm, steady, and unyielding.

""When did all this happen, Maria?"" Leo cried out, his tear-streaked face turning toward her in frantic confusion. ""I want to see my father one last time!""

Maria’s face tightened, a flicker of deep distress crossing her features before she masked it behind a wall of rigid calm. She pulled him backward, away from the casket, her fingers digging gently but resolutely into the fabric of his black suit.

""No, you can't,"" Maria said, her voice dropping to a harsh, urgent whisper that cut through his panic. ""It can't be opened. Your father had a disease... a very contagious disease.""

Leo froze, the words hanging heavily in the sterile air. He stared at her, searching her eyes for any sign of deceit, but found only a terrifying, absolute conviction. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. He didn't know it, but underneath the polished lid, trapped in total darkness, a pair of wide, terrified eyes stared upward into the void, a strip of black duct tape sealing a helpless mouth shut, hidden just inches away from the grief-stricken boy.
