Chapter 14: The Archival Ledger

In late October, the town of Cummington dedicated *The Silas Thorne Memorial Covered Bridge*—a 150-foot heavy-timber span crossing the Westfield River to connect the apprentice academy directly to the regional public school research forests.
The bridge was built entirely of native white oak harvested through sustainable forest thinning, framed by Nathan, Evelyn, and the apprentice crew, and pinned with over one thousand hand-carved locust trunnels.
On a brilliant, crisp Saturday morning, five hundred citizens gathered at the riverbank for the dedication ceremony.
Evelyn and Nathan walked to the entrance of the bridge, holding hands with little Thomas and five-year-old Clara skipping between them.
Sierra stepped forward, holding a pair of bronze ceremonial shears.
She looked at Evelyn, then at the cheering crowd of neighbors, apprentices, and families.
""The crossing is open, neighbors!"" Sierra announced, her clear voice ringing strong and true across the rushing water. ""Walk together in the light!""
She cut the green ribbon with a clean, triumphant *snip*.

The crowd erupted into joyous cheers as vintage farm tractors, horse-drawn wagons, and laughing children ran across the heavy oak decking, their footsteps drumming against the timber like a chorus of enduring strength.
