Chapter 13: The Road to Vermont

The interstate highway stretched out ahead like a ribbon of dark asphalt, cutting through the vibrant autumn foliage of upstate New York as it wound its way northward toward the Vermont border. Inside Elena’s sedan, the atmosphere was peaceful, filled with the soft, comforting murmur of acoustic guitar music playing quietly from the radio. In the passenger seat, eight-year-old Leo stared out the window, watching the colorful maple and oak trees blur past in a steady, hypnotic rhythm.
He wore a brand-new green hoodie and comfortable jeans, his bruised eye nearly completely healed into a faint yellowish tint, and the cut on his lip entirely gone. On the floorboards at his feet sat his scuffed sneakers, placed neatly side by side. He hadn't worn them since that rainy night on the front porch, treating them almost like a sacred relic of a past life that he had somehow miraculously survived.
Elena glanced over at him, noting the relaxed posture and the absence of the frantic tension that had gripped his small frame for weeks after the tragedy. "You doing okay, buddy?" she asked gently, keeping her eyes on the road while reaching out to squeeze his hand reassuringly.
Leo nodded slowly, turning away from the window to look at her. "Are we going to my new room today?" he asked, his voice soft but clear.
"We sure are," Elena smiled warmly. "I painted the walls light blue just like you asked, and we set up the desk by the window so you can build your Lego sets. And you know what else? We have a big golden retriever named Buster who is very friendly and loves playing catch in the yard."

A tiny, genuine smile finally touched the corners of Leo’s mouth—the first real smile Elena had seen since bringing him home from the hospital. The heavy burden of fear and secrecy that had weighed down his young shoulders was slowly beginning to lift, replaced by the simple, beautiful promise of childhood restored. He looked back out the window as a welcome road sign flashed past in the afternoon sun: Welcome to Vermont - The Green Mountain State.
They drove on in companionable silence, leaving the shadows of Elm Street far behind them in the rearview mirror. The nightmare of the past month would always remain a part of their history, a dark chapter that could never be entirely erased, but it would no longer define their future. Leo leaned his head back against the headrest, closing his eyes as the car hummed steadily along the open highway, finally feeling safe enough to rest.
