Chapter 11: The Arraignment

The courtroom of the county municipal building was packed to capacity, the air thick with the murmur of reporters, local residents, and legal aides waiting for the morning session to begin. Flashbulbs popped intermittently outside the double doors as high-profile news vans captured every arrival, treating the tragic domestic murder case as a national spectacle. Inside, the atmosphere was solemn, heavy with the gravity of the charges leveled against Arthur Miller.
At the defense table, Arthur sat flanked by two public defenders. He wore a standard-issue county orange jumpsuit, his dark hair uncombed and his posture slumped forward, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table in front of him. The confident, respectable accountant who had projected an image of suburban perfection was completely gone, replaced by a hollow shell of a man who realized the walls he had built were now his permanent prison. He refused to look toward the gallery, where members of the press and local citizens watched him with undisguised contempt.
At the prosecution table, Detective Maya Vance and Agent Miller sat side by side, reviewing the final case files. Maya wore a crisp dark suit, her expression carved from stone, while Miller kept his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on the defendant. The evidence was overwhelming: forensic reports confirming Sarah’s cause of death, ballistics and DNA traces recovered from the hallway, and the sworn, chilling testimony of an eight-year-old boy who had dared to look behind a Persian rug.
The bailiff’s loud, authoritative voice rang through the room. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Margaret Vance presiding." The courtroom stood as an elderly, stern-looking female judge entered from the side chambers, adjusting her black robes before taking her seat behind the elevated bench. "Be seated," she commanded, her voice cutting sharply through the murmurs of the gallery.
"Calling case number 489-B, The State versus Arthur James Miller," Judge Vance announced, reviewing the paperwork before her. "Charges include murder in the first degree, child abuse, and tampering with physical evidence. How does the defendant plead?"

Arthur’s lead defense attorney stood up, placing a hand on his client's shoulder. "Not guilty at this time, Your Honor, pending psychiatric evaluation."
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery, but Judge Vance silenced it with a sharp tap of her gavel. "Given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming physical evidence presented in the preliminary filings, and the clear flight and safety risks, bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to the state penitentiary without bond pending trial." She struck the gavel once more, the sharp crack signaling the formal beginning of the end for Arthur Miller's reign of terror.
