Chapter 8

The door slammed into the drywall with a hollow echo, revealing the sunlit master bedroom in total disarray. The heavy cedar chest had been dragged completely out from the foot of the bed, its ornate brass latch dangling loosely by a single screw. The lid was thrown back at an awkward angle, exposing a chaotic mess of old photo albums, winter woolens, and tax documents scattered across the Persian rug.
Standing beside the open chest was a figure in a dark hoodie, their back turned toward the doorway as they frantically shoved a thick, leather-bound book into a canvas rucksack.
"Julian!" Elena cried out, taking a sharp step into the room before Marcus could grab her arm.
The hooded figure froze. Slowly, with deliberate reluctance, the intruder turned around to face them. The hood fell back to reveal not Julian's familiar blond hair, but the sweat-slicked forehead and wide, panic-stricken eyes of a completely stranger—a young man no older than twenty-five, wearing a delivery uniform with the company logo ripped off the breast pocket.
"Where is my son?" Elena demanded, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror as she advanced on the terrified young man. "Where is Julian, and what have you done with the ledger?"
The delivery driver stumbled backward, his heel catching on the edge of the scattered photo albums, sending him sprawling onto his back among the family pictures. The canvas rucksack slipped from his hands, spilling its contents across the floor. Out tumbled a half-dozen heavy gold Krugerrands, a diamond-encrusted tennis bracelet, and the thick leather ledger Elena's husband had mentioned on the audio recording.
Marcus moved instantly, dropping to his knees beside the fallen intruder and pinning the young man's wrists to the floor with a heavy, practiced grip.
"Don't move," Marcus ordered, his voice vibrating with restrained fury. "You're not going anywhere until you explain who hired you to raid this house."
The kid beneath him choked back a sob, his chest heaving as he stared up at the ceiling with wide eyes. "I didn't know anyone was going to be here! The man in the silver sedan said the house was empty! He paid me five hundred cash just to grab the black book and the gold coins!"
Elena dropped to her knees beside the scattered leather ledger, ignoring the gold coins and jewelry entirely. Her trembling fingers brushed against the worn calfskin cover of the book.

"The man in the silver sedan," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Was it Julian?"
The kid squeezed his eyes shut, nodding frantically. "Yeah! He said his name was Julian Vance! He was waiting for me two blocks down at the corner store!"
