Chapter 1

Elena stood at the sun-baked edge of the concrete patio, her knuckles white as she gripped the heavy ribbed plastic of the black pool vacuum hose. Inside the pristine, chlorine-scented water of the backyard swimming pool, a thick plume of black sludge, decaying sycamore leaves, and winter muck billowed outward from the hose nozzle, ruining the crystal-blue expanse she had spent all morning scrubbing. Her chest heaved with shallow, ragged breaths, the fifty-year-old fabric of her patterned blouse damp with sweat against her collarbone. Across the shimmering water, her thirty-five-year-old stepson, Marcus, strode rapidly across the flagstones, his jaw clenched and his dark t-shirt stretching tightly across his shoulders as he raised a hand in frustrated disbelief.
"You're making everything more complicated!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking slightly with a blend of exhaustion and fury as he stopped three feet from the patio table.
Elena whirled around on her heel, her short grey-streaked hair catching the harsh afternoon glare, and threw her hands up in the air with sudden, bitter defiance.
"Go ahead!" Elena screamed, her voice breaking past the lump in her throat.
"Hit me!"
Marcus froze mid-stride, his arms dropping to his sides as if he had been struck by an invisible physical force. He stared at her with a look of horrified betrayal that cut deeper than any insult she could have hurled.
"Is that really what you think of me after all these years?" Marcus whispered, the anger instantly draining from his face to leave a pale, hollow mask.
"I don't know what to think anymore," Elena replied, her hands trembling as she pointed down at the murky black water swirling in the deep end. "Just like I don't know why your father's signature is missing from the trust fund papers."

Marcus took a sharp step backward, his eyes darting toward the sliding glass door of the house before locking back onto her face with a terrifying stillness.
"What did you just say?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
