Chapter 13

The office of the Special Agent in Charge was a bright, modern room overlooking the bustling plaza outside the courthouse. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the small conference table where Arthur and Charca sat across from Agent Vance. A pot of strong black coffee steamed quietly between them, filling the room with a rich, comforting aroma.
Agent Vance carefully laid out the singed, water-damaged pages of the ledger alongside the pristine duplicate from the bank safety deposit box. She flipped through the entries with practiced efficiency, her expression shifting from casual professional skepticism to grim, absolute focus as the names of prominent city politicians, real estate moguls, and corporate executives stared back at her from the columns of figures.
“My God,” Agent Vance whispered, looking up from the documents to fix her steady gaze on Arthur. “This isn't just an ordinary embezzlement scheme. This is the blueprint for how half the commercial real estate in this city was acquired through arson and insurance fraud three decades ago.”
“And the men who signed those orders are the ones currently running the city council and funding the upcoming mayoral elections,” Arthur said plainly, sipping a cup of coffee with steady hands.
“We’ve suspected foul play in that district for years, but every time an investigation got close to the root, files would disappear or key witnesses would vanish,” Agent Vance said, leaning back in her leather chair and tapping a pen against her notepad. She looked toward Charca, who sat quietly beside her father, her hand resting over her injured side. “And you say men connected to these executives tracked you down last night?”
“A man named Henderson,” Charca replied, her voice firm and clear. “He’s their primary fixer. He chased me through the rail yards and the old bank vault because he knew I had the ledger.”

Agent Vance nodded slowly, reaching for her desk phone. “We have enough here to issue immediate federal warrants for corporate racketeering, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. But to bring down the higher-ups, we need to move fast before they realize the files have been recovered.”
She pressed a button on her intercom. “Get the tactical response team on standby, and notify the U.S. Attorney’s office that we are executing a series of simultaneous raids this morning. I want all major suspects detained within the hour.”
