The pale morning sun cut through the lingering wisps of fog, casting long, sharp shadows across the awakening streets of the downtown district. Arthur and Charca emerged from a municipal utility exit near City Hall, blending seamlessly into the early commuter foot traffic. Passersby rushed past them with downcast eyes and hurried strides, completely unaware of the high-stakes drama that had played out beneath their feet just hours before.
Arthur kept his arm firmly around Charca’s waist, supporting her weight as she walked with a slight limp, her face pale from blood loss and exhaustion. They stopped on the broad granite steps of the federal courthouse, its massive neoclassical columns standing as an enduring symbol of justice against the gray autumn sky.
“Are you sure about this?” Charca asked, looking up at the heavy bronze doors bearing the seal of the Department of Justice. “Once we walk through those doors, there’s no turning back. They’ll open an immediate federal investigation, and Henderson’s employers will pull every string they have to discredit us.”
“Let them try,” Arthur replied, his voice steady and resolute. He looked down at his daughter, his eyes softening with profound pride. “For thirty years, I thought I had lost everything that mattered in the ashes of that warehouse. But standing here today, holding your hand, I realize the fire didn't destroy us. It just forged us into something they couldn't break.”
