Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

The private study on the third floor was insulated by heavy oak panels, but the silence inside offered no peace. Julian sat at his mahogany desk, three monitors flickering with financial tickers and confidential legal briefs. Across the screen, the news was spreading: rumors of financial misconduct and hidden probate disputes had triggered an immediate drop in Sterling equity.

Elena entered without knocking. She had changed out of her morning gown into a sharply tailored navy suit, her hair pulled back into a severe chignon. In her hand, she held a slim manila folder.

“My lawyers have already drafted the separation agreement,” Elena said coolly, setting the folder on the polished wood. “If you sign now, I keep forty percent of the coastal development assets, and I won't testify before the board about the child.”

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “You think this is about money, Elena? Did you hear the recording?”

“I don't care about the recording!” she snapped, her composed facade cracking for a fleeting second, revealing the humiliation underneath. “You made me a fool in front of the domestic staff! You brought a ghost into my home on the anniversary of our investment! Arthur told me Clara died three years ago!”

Julian froze. “Arthur told you she died three years ago?”

Elena paused, her blue eyes narrowing. “Yes. When we signed the prenuptial agreement. He said all lingering domestic claims from your past relationships had been fully liquidated and certified deceased.”

The room seemed to tilt. Julian pulled up the corporate ledger from three years prior on his terminal. The signature authorizing the severance payment to Clara wasn't signed by his late father—it bore the electronic validation of Vance & Associates, cross-referenced with Elena’s father’s venture fund.

“They didn't pay her off to protect me,” Julian said, the puzzle pieces slamming together with horrific clarity. “They used my alleged abandonments to blackmail your father into financing the restructuring. And now, they’re using Clara’s surviving child to trigger the morality clause to seize total control.”

A knock rattled the study door. Marta burst in without waiting for permission, her face pale.

“Mr. Julian,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “The little girl. She went to the garden to find her bear… and there is an unmarked van parked at the lower terrace.”
