Chapter 11 - Blood and Paperwork

The sound of Emma’s confused wailing tore through the sterile hospital room like a blade. Julian did not let her witness the resuscitation team’s frantic, futile chest compressions; he scooped his daughter up, pulling her face into his shoulder, shielding her eyes from the defibrillator paddles and the graying stillness of her mother’s body.
As he walked back into the corridor, Elena was standing inches from her father, Marcus Hale, her finger pointed directly at his chest.
“You knew,” Elena hissed, her voice trembling with disgust. “You financed Vance’s maritime acquisition five years ago using my trust fund as collateral.”
Marcus adjusted his gold cufflinks, refusing to meet his daughter’s eyes. “It was business, Elena. The Sterling Group was drowning. We carved out the dead weight.”
“Clara wasn't dead weight!” Julian roared, stepping between them, holding Emma with his left arm while holding the rusted iron key in his right hand. “She was an innocent woman, and your puppet Vance kept her in an uncertified clinic until her lungs failed!”
Arthur Vance stepped forward, flanked by two armed county marshals who had just entered from the stairwell. “Julian Sterling, under order of the probate court of Essex County, you are harboring an unregistered minor without certified paternity or custody authorization. Hand the child over to the marshals.”
The marshals stepped forward, their leather belts creaking. Emma screamed, clinging to Julian’s neck with both arms, her small fingers knotting into the fabric of his shirt.
Julian looked at Elena. For the first time in their four years of calculated, arranged marriage, he saw no socialite, no heiress, no corporate ally. He saw a woman enraged by betrayal.
Elena reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a small black fountain pen, and looked Arthur dead in the eye. “Arthur, who handles the notary authorization for the Hale Family Trust?”
Vance blinked, off-balance. “I do, Mrs. Sterling.”

“Then you know,” she said smoothly, taking Emma’s birth certificate copy from Julian’s coat pocket, “that as primary trustee of the Hale Foundation, I have the legal authority to sign emergency kinship adoption affidavits on behalf of any minor residing within our primary residence for over twenty-four hours.”
She scribbled her signature across the legal declaration, slammed the paper against Arthur’s chest, and added, “Take this child, and I will freeze every Hale banking asset currently funding your takeover.”
