Chapter 8

The flames in the stone hearth snapped and crackled, casting dancing shadows across the rough-hewn pine walls of the cabin. Amy froze mid-motion, her hands hovering protectively over Leo, who stirred softly in his sleep before settling back into a deep, exhausted slumber. The absolute silence of the wilderness suddenly felt heavy, suffocating, and terrifyingly fragile.
"How is that possible?" Amy whispered, her voice trembling as she scrambled to her feet, her eyes fixed on the heavy wooden front door. "We paid in cash, we switched lines twice, and there is no cell service out here for thirty miles. They couldn't have tracked our phones."
"They didn't track our phones," Mark replied coldly, gripping the iron fireplace poker so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. He stepped closer to the frost-covered window, peering through a small clear patch in the glass. "Eleanor doesn't rely on cell towers. She has a private satellite surveillance firm on retainer that uses thermal imaging and drone sweeps. We were flagged the moment we stepped off the regional bus."
Outside, the faint, low-frequency hum of an electric motor began to vibrate through the frozen earth. It wasn't the roaring engine of a standard truck; it was a high-end, military-grade tactical utility vehicle moving in complete stealth. The vehicle stopped roughly two hundred yards down the private logging road, right at the boundary line of the property.
"We need to move," Amy urged, her maternal panic flaring back to life as she scooped Leo into her arms, wrapping him tightly against her chest. "There has to be a back trail leading down to the creek bed."
"There is," Mark said, nodding toward the small mudroom at the rear of the cabin. "It leads down into the ravine. If we can reach the old logging bridge, we can cross over to the state highway before they sweep the perimeter."
Mark threw open the back door, leading Amy out into the freezing dawn air. The temperature was well below freezing, and a fresh layer of crisp snow crunched loudly beneath their boots—leaving an unmistakable, clear trail of footprints pointing directly away from the rear exit. Mark cursed under his breath, realizing that trying to hide their tracks in the deep snow was impossible.
"Go!" Mark urged, pushing Amy gently down the steep, snow-covered embankment that sloped toward the dark, ice-choked creek below.
They scrambled down the slippery incline, the biting wind whipping through the pine branches overhead. Leo whimpered softly against Amy’s chest, but the bitter cold quickly quieted him into a lethargic, heavy sleep. As they reached the bottom of the ravine, the sound of crunching footsteps echoed loudly from the top of the ridge behind them.
"Over here! Target spotted heading toward the ravine!" a sharp, metallic voice called out through a handheld tactical radio from the cabin’s backyard.
Mark grabbed Amy’s hand, pulling her through the dense thicket of briars and frozen brush toward the dilapidated wooden bridge spanning the narrow creek. The old timber planks were slick with black ice, rotting and unstable after years of neglect.
"Be careful where you step," Mark warned, testing the first plank with the toe of his boot. It groaned ominously under his weight.
Suddenly, the harsh beam of a high-powered tactical spotlight cut through the dense canopy of trees, washing over the ravine in a blinding white glare.
"Stop right there! Federal and corporate custody mandate in effect! Step away from the child!" a bullhorn blared from the top of the ridge, the amplified voice bouncing terrifyingly off the canyon walls.
Mark shielded his eyes with his free hand, turning back to see two figures in tactical winter gear descending the steep embankment with terrifying speed, their rifles slung securely across their chests.

"Don't listen to them, keep moving!" Amy cried out, taking a frantic step onto the icy wooden bridge.
The ancient timber snapped with a deafening crack beneath her boot. The center section of the bridge gave way instantly, plunging Amy and Leo toward the freezing, rocky creek bed below.
