Chapter 3

Mark slowly lowered the bank statement behind his thigh, his mind racing to find a coherent explanation for the document burning a hole in his palm. The nursery was dimly lit by a star-projector glowing softly on the ceiling, casting purple and blue constellations across the walls. Amy stood in the doorway, her silhouette frail and exhausted against the hallway light, holding a damp washcloth and a bottle of infant ibuprofen.
"Did you find the thermometer?" Amy repeated, her voice laced with exhaustion as she stepped closer, her eyes searching his face for answers.
Mark forced his shoulders to relax, though every muscle in his body remained coiled like a tightened spring. He brought his empty hand up, holding the small plastic case containing the digital thermometer.
"Found it," Mark said, his voice remarkably steady despite the chaotic storm raging in his chest. He handed her the thermometer before she could spot the paper hidden behind his leg. "How is his temperature?"
Amy immediately shifted her focus back to their sick child, her maternal panic instantly overriding any suspicion she might have had. She hurried over to the crib, gently sliding the thermometer against Leo’s temple. The device beeped softly a second later, flashing a glowing red warning light.
"One hundred and four point two," Amy gasped, her voice breaking as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "Mark, we have to take him to the emergency room right now. This isn't just a normal fever."
"Grab his diaper bag, I’ll pull the car around," Mark commanded, scooping Leo into his arms and wrapping him securely in a lightweight cotton blanket.
As Amy scrambled to pack bottles, spare clothes, and medical insurance cards, Mark slipped the bank statement into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. The short drive to the city hospital felt like an eternity. The rain had started to fall, slicking the dark asphalt and casting long, distorted reflections of streetlights across the windshield. Inside the car, the heater hummed quietly, but Amy sat rigidly in the passenger seat, staring out the window with a haunted expression, gently humming a lullaby to try and soothe the crying baby in the back seat.
When they arrived at the pediatric emergency entrance, the triage nurses moved with practiced efficiency. Within ten minutes, Leo was placed in a sterile examination room, hooked up to a series of soft monitors that tracked his vital signs. A young, calm doctor named Dr. Sterling reviewed the initial blood panels and administered a rapid-rehydration IV drip.
"He has a severe viral infection," Dr. Sterling explained gently, reviewing the chart on his clipboard. "Coupled with dehydration, it caused his temperature to spike dangerously high. We caught it just in time. He’s going to need to stay overnight for observation, but his white blood cell count is already stabilizing."
Amy let out a ragged, shuddering breath, burying her face in her hands as the sheer weight of the scare finally caught up with her. Mark pulled a chair close, wrapping his arms tightly around her shoulders, murmuring words of comfort against her hair.
As Amy eventually drifted into an exhausted sleep, resting her head against Mark’s shoulder in the sterile hospital chair, Mark reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out the folded paper he had found in the bathroom drawer. Under the harsh fluorescent light of the hospital room, he unfolded the document and began reading the fine print line by line.

It wasn't just a standard trust fund. It was an NDA payout schedule. The sender was Eleanor’s corporate holding company, and the recipient was listed as Amy Miller, dated exactly one week before their wedding day. The memo line read: Compensation for compliance regarding the maternal custody waiver.
Mark stared at the words, the room seeming to spin violently around him as a terrifying realization began to form in his mind. Amy had never told him about this. His mother had paid his wife off before they were even married. And right below the signature line was a handwritten clause initialed by Amy herself, detailing a secret clause that involved not just money, but something far more valuable.
