Chapter 14 - The Checkmate

She spun around. The hunter was leaning against the doorframe, his rifle aimed squarely at her husband's chest. "Let her go," the old man shouted over the roar of the helicopter blades. The husband laughed, signaling his men. Six laser sights appeared on the hunter's chest. "You're out of your league, old man," the husband sneered. But the mother didn't freeze. While the husband was distracted by the hunter, she pulled the satellite phone from her pocket and hit the single speed-dial number she had found saved in the device—the contact labeled 'Federal Handler'. "The files are secured. He's at these GPS coordinates. Bring the raid," she shouted into the receiver before smashing the phone on a rock. The husband's smug expression vanished. He realized the phone she used was his own enforcer's line to their corrupt contacts, which he knew the FBI had been monitoring. Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, echoing up the mountain pass. The husband grabbed her by the hair, pulling a gun to her head. "If I go down, you go down with me."
