Chapter 5

Clara stared at the glowing screen of her smartphone, her fingers trembling so violently she nearly dropped the expensive device onto the mahogany table. The notification wasn't a routine account update; it was a fraud alert combined with an automated balance notification from the primary family holding account. She tapped the app icon frantically, entering her six-digit security passcode with a clumsy urgency that mirrored her inner panic.
"What is it now?" Brenda asked, leaning back in her chair with a cautious frown, sensing that the tone in the room had shifted from domestic warfare to genuine crisis. "Did the bank reject the transfer?"
"No," Clara whispered, the word barely escaping her parched lips. She cleared her throat, trying to force sound past the sudden lump constricting her windpipe. "Worse. Much worse."
David leaned forward, his protective instincts momentarily overriding his exhaustion. "Clara, what are you talking about? Talk to us."
With a shaky hand, Clara turned the phone screen toward her husband and sister, displaying a bank ledger that showed a row of terrifying red numbers. The main operational account, the one holding the collective savings of their immediate family, had just been systematically drained across four rapid wire transfers executed less than ten minutes ago. The remaining balance flashed a mocking zero. Fifteen thousand dollars—the very sum Clara had been aggressively dangling over Chloe’s head moments earlier—was completely gone, along with an additional forty thousand dollars in baseline emergency reserves.
David grabbed the phone, his eyes darting across the transaction details. "This... this is impossible. Who has access to the master key besides you?"
"Nobody!" Clara shouted, panic finally piercing her tough exterior as genuine terror gripped her chest. "Only me! And... and the secondary admin profile." She froze, her eyes widening in sudden, horrified realization. The secondary admin profile hadn't been touched in three years. It was an old security backup account that was supposed to have been archived, registered under the name of her estranged brother, Marcus, who had vanished from their lives a decade ago after a bitter inheritance dispute.

Brenda stood up so abruptly her chair screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. "Marcus? You told us he signed away all rights to the trust years ago! You told us he took his buyout and left the state forever!"
"He did! Or at least... or at least that’s what the settlement papers said!" Clara stammered, her hands flying to her face as she tried to rub away the nightmare unfolding before her eyes. The irony hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating fog. While Clara had spent the evening bullying her teenage daughter over a petty fifteen thousand dollars of conditional funds, a much larger, invisible thief had just cleaned out their entire financial foundation using credentials Clara thought she controlled absolutely.
