Chapter 14

Summer arrived in full swing, bringing warm afternoon breezes and long, sunlit evenings that stretched lazily into dusk. Chloe finished packing her duffel bag in her bedroom, tossing in her favorite green sweater alongside her travel essentials for the road trip with Mia. Her smartphone rested on the nightstand, its screen dark and quiet, free from any stressful payment app alerts, conditional ultimatums, or toxic family demands.

Downstairs in the modest kitchen, Clara and David were quietly organizing receipts for the upcoming month’s modest household budget. There were no hidden accounts, no backup admin profiles, and no desperate financial shell games. Every dollar earned was accounted for openly, and every decision was made together as equal partners.

A gentle knock echoed at the apartment door, and Marcus let himself in with his usual easygoing wave, holding a box of pastries from the local bakery down the street. "Morning, family! Or afternoon, rather, depending on how late everyone slept in."

Clara looked up from the kitchen island, offering a genuine, relaxed smile that reached her eyes. "Come on in, Marcus. Coffee is just about ready."

As Marcus stepped into the kitchen, handing the pastry box to David, Chloe emerged from the hallway carrying her packed duffel bag. She stopped by the living room, looking at the three adults who had navigated the most turbulent storm of their lives and emerged stronger, wiser, and profoundly more human on the other side.

"All packed?" David asked, setting his coffee mug down and walking over to his daughter, wrapping her in a warm, protective embrace that held zero conditions or strings attached.

"All packed, Dad," Chloe replied softly, resting her chin on his shoulder. She looked over at her mother, who walked over to join the embrace, wrapping her arms around both of them in a simple, quiet gesture of unconditional maternal love.

"Have an amazing time with Mia," Clara said, her voice steady and warm, carrying no trace of the bitter desperation that had defined their lives a year ago. "Drive safe, call us when you get there, and remember—no money required to prove how much we love you."

Chloe smiled brightly, pulling back from the hug and adjusting the strap of her bag over her shoulder. "I know, Mom. I know."
