Chapter 5

Back at the colonial house, the silence had turned toxic. Julian sat at the dining table alone, the morning sun casting long, accusatory shadows across the polished wood where Clara’s wedding ring had rested just two days prior. The ring was gone now; he had swept it into his desk drawer yesterday afternoon, unable to bear the sight of it mocking him every time he walked past.
His phone buzzed on the table. Expecting another ignored call to Clara, he glanced at the screen, only to see an official alert from his primary banking app. Account flagged for review. Temporary suspension of credit line pending verification.
Julian frowned, tapping the notification. The screen refreshed, displaying a chilling red warning banner. He stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the wainscoting, and dialed his mother’s number.
Elena’s footsteps clicked rapidly down the hardwood stairs before she pushed open the dining room door, her silk blouse slightly rumpled. "Julian, what is wrong with you? You’re making enough noise to wake the dead."
"My corporate card is frozen," Julian said, his voice rising in panic as he thrust the phone toward her. "And the home equity line—it’s locked. The bank says there’s an active fraud alert linked to our shared liabilities."
Elena’s face tightened, the smug composure she had worn at the dinner table evaporating instantly. "Fraud alert? That’s impossible. Who would—Clara?"
"Clara doesn’t have the clearance to freeze a commercial credit line," Julian snapped, pacing across the room. "Unless... unless she talked to someone."
"She’s an analyst, Julian, she isn’t a lawyer," Elena said, though a tremor of genuine unease crept into her tone. She walked over to the mahogany table, resting her hand on the same chair she had proudly claimed two nights ago. "Call her back. Tell her we’ll... we can talk about seating arrangements. Tell her she can have the small guest room upstairs converted into her home office."

"Mother, open your eyes!" Julian shouted, the thin veneer of his calm demeanor finally shattering. "She didn't leave because of the chair! She left because she’s done! And if those accounts stay frozen, we can’t make the monthly payment on the warehouse loan by Friday. You know what happens if we default on that."
The warehouse loan was the secret anchor holding up Elena’s remaining financial illusions—a commercial property she had purchased under Julian’s name to hide it from her own messy bankruptcy proceedings years prior. If that loan defaulted, the entire house of cards would come tumbling down, exposing not just Julian’s negligence, but Elena’s systemic fraud.
