Chapter 11

The emergency waiting room at Mercy General Hospital smelled of antiseptic and institutional floor wax. Julian walked through the automatic sliding doors, his coat collar turned up against the wind, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. He spotted Marcus sitting in a plastic chair near the triage desk, staring blankly at the floor.

"How is she?" Julian asked, his voice cracking as he dropped into the seat beside his brother.

"She’s stable," Marcus said quietly, not looking up. "High blood pressure spike triggered by extreme stress. The doctor says she needs absolute quiet for the next few days. No legal paperwork, no phone calls, no financial decisions."

Julian pressed his face into his hands, letting out a long, ragged breath. "The house, Marcus? What happened with the marshals?"

"They served the notice," Marcus replied bitterly. "The trust assets are frozen pending the court hearing next month. If we can't prove legitimate capital origin by then, the house goes into receivership. Everything goes."

Julian looked around the sterile waiting room. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh, unforgiving glare over the patients and families waiting in quiet misery. It was a far cry from the polished mahogany dining room where they had sat just ten days ago, secure in their arrogance, believing their name and their traditions protected them from the rest of the world.

"It was Clara," Julian murmured, almost to himself. "She warned us."

"No, Julian," Marcus corrected him, turning his head to look at his brother with undisguised resentment. "We warned ourselves. We spent five years treating her like an open bank account and a piece of furniture. We thought she’d just take it forever because that’s what people like us do—we use people until they break."

Julian had no defense. He sat in silence, the harsh hum of the hospital lights beating down on him as he realized that the family empire he had been raised to protect was nothing more than a house built on sand.
