Chapter 2

The heavy silence inside the luxury sedan felt suffocating as Marco navigated the rain-slicked highway leading toward the city center. The rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers matched the frantic pounding of his own heart, though he desperately tried to maintain an air of absolute triumph. He kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel while his free hand constantly checked his watch, calculating the exact minutes left before the courthouse closed its filing windows for the weekend. To Marco, every second ticked closer to absolute freedom and the legal acquisition of a multi-million-dollar corporate portfolio that Elena had foolishly surrendered into his singular control during the early, trusting years of their marriage.
Elena sat rigidly in the passenger seat, her silhouette illuminated intermittently by the harsh glare of passing streetlights and oncoming headlights. Her hands rested comfortably over the prominent swell of her stomach, shielding the innocent life growing inside her from the toxic storm of betrayal swirling around them. She had not uttered a single word since they left the condominium complex behind, choosing instead to watch the blurred cityscape dissolve into a wash of gray shadows. Her stoic demeanor unnerved Marco more than any tearful outburst or screaming match ever could. He sneaked a sideways glance at her calm profile, irritated by her eerie lack of emotion after losing everything.
"Quit staring at the road like you've already won the lottery, Marco," Elena finally broke the heavy silence, her voice cutting through the hum of the engine like a surgical blade.
Marco gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white as defensive irritation flared in his chest. "We both agreed to this, Elena. You signed the papers willingly. No drama, no messy courtroom battles. Just a clean break."
Elena turned her head slowly, her dark eyes locking onto his with a penetrating chill that made the seasoned businessman instinctively swallow hard.
"Marco, hiwalayan mo na lang yang buntis mong asawa," Elena stated calmly, dropping a subtle, devastating linguistic hint that referred to his secret pregnant mistress waiting in the wings. "Aalis ka bukas ng walang makuha kahit isang sentimo."
Marco slammed his foot on the brake slightly, causing the car to swerve briefly before he corrected it with a sharp jerk of the steering wheel. "What kind of insane game are you playing now? The papers are signed, notarized, and sitting right in my briefcase in the back seat! Everything you built is legally mine!"

Elena did not blink, her expression remaining frozen in a terrifyingly serene mask. "Is it really?" she whispered.
Before Marco could demand an explanation, the dashboard display suddenly flashed a bright red warning light, followed instantly by the blaring emergency sound of the car’s primary onboard computer completely shutting down its engine systems.
