Chapter 1

The bedroom was suffocatingly quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of the ceiling fan and the heavy, measured breathing of the pregnant woman sitting on the edge of the mattress. Elena wore a simple white blouse that hugged the gentle curve of her seven-month pregnancy, her long dark hair falling heavily over one shoulder. Standing directly behind her was Marco, her husband, dressed in a sharp dark suit jacket and a crisp white shirt. His jawline, shadowed by a neatly trimmed short beard, remained tense as he watched every microscopic movement of her hand. On the wooden nightstand sat the heavy leather clipboard holding the legal documents that would officially sever their three-year marriage.

Marco shifted his weight, his leather shoes creaking slightly against the hardwood floor. He glanced at his Rolex, then down at Elena, his voice dropping into a soft, commanding whisper that carried an unmistakable edge of urgency.

"Pumirma ka na diyan sa divorce papers," Marco said, his tone devoid of any lingering warmth or marital affection.

Elena did not flinch, nor did she rush. She gripped the black ballpoint pen with steady fingers. Her mind flashed back to the vows they had exchanged in a modest Manila chapel, and more importantly, to the financial empire she had secretly built and foolishly placed under his corporate name to protect him from her family’s ruthless conglomerates. She positioned the tip of the pen against the dotted line.

"You are making the right choice, Marco," Elena said softly, her voice remarkably even. "Simplicity is always better when greed takes over."

Marco frowned, stepping closer, eager to see the ink touch the paper. "Just sign it, Elena. We both know this marriage died months ago. Don't make it harder than it has to be."

With deliberate slowness, Elena pressed the pen down and began executing her signature. Every stroke of the black ink felt like a physical anchor being pulled from the seabed of their shared history. When she finished, she didn’t drop the pen. Instead, she slowly raised her chin, her dark eyes meeting his in the vanity mirror with a calm, stoic expression that made a sudden, inexplicable chill run down Marco’s spine.

"It’s done," Elena whispered, handing him the clipboard.

Marco snatched the clipboard, his eyes scanning the signature with predatory relief. He turned on his heel toward the door, eager to finalize the filing with his attorney. But as he reached for the brass handle, Elena’s phone on the nightstand buzzed with a bright illumination, displaying a text message from a blocked number that read: “The transfer of the main holding account to the primary offshore trust has cleared successfully, madam.”
