Chapter 6: The Brother’s Shadow

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway seemed to dim as Detective Miller spoke the name that was already burning in Elena’s mind. ""David Vance,"" the detective said quietly, pulling a small notepad from his pocket. ""Your brother-in-law. Patrol units are currently heading to his apartment across town to bring him in for questioning.""

Elena didn't blink. The confirmation felt less like a shock and more like the inevitable snapping of a taut wire. ""He used a sedative,"" she stated flatly, her voice devoid of any surprise. ""He slipped it into her bottle on Tuesday night when he visited.""

Detective Miller looked up sharply, surprise flickering across his weathered features. ""How could you possibly know that? The hospital lab results were just finalized ten minutes ago.""

""Because people like David don't invent new methods; they rely on convenience,"" Elena replied, her tone chillingly analytical. ""He always complained about how difficult babies are to manage. He thought we were living a comfortable life while he was drowning in debt from his gambling problems. He thought he could leverage Lily to force us into paying him off.""

""We don't have definitive proof of motive yet, Mrs. Vance,"" Detective Miller cautioned, holding up a hand. ""We need to bring him in, interrogate him, and build a solid case for the district attorney. I must ask you and your husband to stay here at the hospital and let law enforcement handle the apprehension.""

Elena offered a slow, stiff nod. ""Of course, Detective. We’ll stay right here.""

As Detective Miller turned and walked away down the corridor, pulling his radio from his belt to coordinate with the units dispatched to David’s apartment, Elena stood motionless for a long moment. She watched the heavy glass doors swing shut behind him, then turned and walked back toward Trauma Room Three.

Mark was sitting by the bedside, gently stroking Lily’s tiny hand as she continued to sleep under the steady rhythm of the monitors. He looked up as Elena entered, his eyes hollow with despair.

""The detective told you?"" Mark asked quietly.

""Yes. It was David,"" Elena said, her voice dangerously even as she closed the door behind her.

Mark buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, exhausted sobs. ""My own brother. How could he do that? I helped him pay off his rent six months ago. I gave him money when he lost his job. Why would he hurt my baby?""

""Because he’s desperate, and desperation makes monsters out of weak men,"" Elena said, walking over to the window and looking out into the dark parking lot below. The police cruisers were gone, having already mobilized toward David’s location.

""What are we going to do, Elena?"" Mark asked, his voice cracking with vulnerability. ""The police will arrest him, he’ll go to trial, and eventually... what? He’ll get a sentence, but it won't undo what he did to our daughter.""

Elena turned slowly away from the window, her eyes fixing on Mark with an intensity that made him momentarily forget his own grief. ""Trials take months, Mark. Lawyers find loopholes. Juries get confused. People like David slip through the cracks every single day."" She walked over and placed her hand firmly on his shoulder, her grip iron-clad. ""No one is going to protect our family better than we can.""

Mark looked up, sensing the terrifying transformation in his wife. The frightened mother who had screamed in agony by the green dumpster had completely vanished, replaced by an apex predator guarding her cub.
