Chapter 12: The Ultimatum

The heavy silence that fell over the pool hall was absolute. The background music from the jukebox seemed to fade into nothingness as Vince stared down at Elena, his calculating expression hardening into genuine menace.

""You've got a wild imagination, lady,"" Vince said, taking a slow step closer, his voice dropping to a low, threatening murmur. ""Nobody put a kid in a dumpster. That sounds like a tragic domestic accident that your pathetic family is trying to pin on outside forces to save face.""

Elena didn't blink. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, sleek digital voice recorder, placing it gently onto the scarred wooden bar between them. With a single click of her thumb, the tinny sound of a recorded telephone conversation filled the air around them.

*“...if the kid doesn't stay in the trash until they pay up, the deal is off, Vince...”*

The voice on the recording was unmistakable—it was Vince’s own voice, captured on David’s burner phone two nights ago during their final frantic exchange.

Vince’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. In a fraction of a second, his hand lashed out, grabbing the recorder off the bar with the intent of smashing it against the floor. But before his fingers could close around the device, Elena’s hand moved with lightning-fast, predatory precision. She grabbed his wrist in a steel grip, twisting his arm upward with a sudden, sharp torque that forced a sharp gasp of pain from his lips.

The surrounding patrons at the pool tables stood up abruptly, reaching for pool cues and stepping toward the bar, but Vince held up his free hand, gritting his teeth as he struggled against Elena’s iron hold.

""Stop!"" Vince choked out, his face contorting in pain as the pressure on his wrist reached the threshold of dislocation. He looked at Elena with newfound, terrified respect. She wasn't just an angry mother; she was an apex predator protecting her home.

Elena slowly released his wrist, smoothing down the front of her dark wool coat with calm, deliberate movements. She picked up the voice recorder and slid it back into her pocket.

""Here is how this is going to work, Vince,"" Elena said, her voice completely steady, carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument. ""The police have a copy of this audio file backed up on a secure cloud server, programmed to release directly to the FBI and the district attorney's office if I don't deactivate it by midnight tonight.""

Vince rubbed his throbbing wrist, glaring at her with pure venom. ""What do you want? Money? We can negotiate a payout—""

""I don't want your money,"" Elena interrupted sharply. ""Money doesn't fix what you broke. What I want is a permanent guarantee that neither you, nor any of your associates, will ever step foot within fifty miles of my family again.""

""And if we refuse?"" Vince sneered, regaining a fraction of his composure as he leaned against the pool table behind him. ""You go to the cops. We do a little time, and our guys on the outside make sure your life remains a living hell.""

May you like

Elena smiled—a cold, terrifying expression that didn't reach her eyes. ""If you refuse, Vince, the federal indictment comes down tomorrow morning, ensuring you spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security penitentiary where the inmates won't be nearly as polite as I am."" She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. ""Choose wisely.""
