Chapter 8

Agent Thomas Vance strode into the grand foyer with an air of absolute authority, his dark eyes scanning the opulent details of the house before fixing directly on Julian and Evelyn. The two armed federal agents flanking him positioned themselves strategically by the base of the staircase, effectively cutting off any attempt to retreat further into the estate. Julian stepped forward, instinctively trying to project the intimidating demeanor that had cowed business rivals for years, but his rumpled pink suit and bloodshot eyes undermined every ounce of his projected power.

“You are trespassing on private property without a warrant,” Julian barked, his voice trembling slightly despite his effort to sound commanding. “I demand to know who authorized this intrusion. Do you have any idea who my associates are?”

Vance stopped a few feet away, reaching inside his tailored jacket to pull out a thick, official document sealed with a federal magistrate’s signature. He unfolded it with crisp efficiency and held it out for Julian to inspect, though Julian made no move to take it.

“Mr. Julian Vance, you are named in a federal indictment charging wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to obstruct justice,” Vance stated clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. “We have warrants to search every square foot of this property, seize all corporate assets, and freeze every financial account tied to your name and your mother’s holding companies.”

Evelyn stepped away from the dining table, her dark floral dress sweeping smoothly across the floor as she approached the federal agent. Her expression remained remarkably serene, untouched by the panic radiating from her son. She adjusted her pearl necklace with measured elegance, sizing up the investigator with the practiced eye of someone who had navigated boardrooms and courtrooms for decades.

“You speak of indictments and asset freezes as if they are absolute truths, Agent Vance,” Evelyn said smoothly, her voice cool and composed. “Every corporate structure associated with this family has operated within the legal boundaries established by state and federal tax codes. You will find nothing here that withstands actual judicial scrutiny.”

Vance offered a thin, unimpressed smile, recognizing the classic deflection tactic of the elite class accustomed to buying their way out of scrutiny.

“That is for a federal judge and a jury to decide, Mrs. Vance,” Vance replied evenly. “And given the comprehensive nature of the financial records recently provided to our division—complete with digital signatures, offshore transfer logs, and encrypted audit trails—I suspect the judicial process will move rather quickly.”

At the mention of comprehensive records, Julian’s face drained of color. He looked from Vance back toward the grand staircase, his mind finally connecting the missing pink suitcase with the absolute destruction of his life.

“Elena,” Julian whispered, the name escaping his lips like a curse. “She gave you everything, didn’t she?”

“Ms. Somers cooperated fully with a federal investigation into corporate malfeasance,” Vance stated, stepping past them to signal the additional agents waiting by the entrance. “Now, I must ask you both to step into the drawing-room while my team executes the search warrant. Any attempt to interfere with federal officers will result in immediate arrest.”

Evelyn placed a steady hand on Julian’s rigid shoulder, guiding him away from the foyer before his frayed temper could erupt into violence. As they walked toward the drawing-room under the watchful eyes of the armed agents, the grand house felt less like a sanctuary and more like a tomb sealing them away from a world that had finally stopped listening to their demands.
