Chapter 2: The Open Driveway

The afternoon air outside was crisp, carrying the scent of autumn cedar and falling leaves.
Valet attendants stood by the circular driveway, startled by the sight of Emma in her lilac dress, carrying a sobbing toddler without a coat.
""Emma! Get back inside!""
Ryan’s voice echoed down the stone steps. He strode across the gravel, his face reddening with sudden, angry embarrassment as he realized the catering staff and drivers were watching.
""You don't walk out of my daughter's birthday party, Emma!"" Ryan snarled, reaching out to grab her upper arm.
Emma spun around with a speed that made him flinch. Her hazel eyes burned with such absolute, lethal ferocity that Ryan’s hand froze mid-air.
""Touch me or this child again, Ryan,"" Emma said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying register of pure resolve, ""and I will have the Greenwich police take you off this driveway in front of every investor in that room.""
Ryan took a half-step back, sneering. ""You have nowhere to go, Emma. You don't have a dime that doesn't flow through my trust. You'll be back on your knees by midnight.""
""Don't wait up,"" Emma said.
She unlocked her station wagon parked near the garage, strapped Lily safely into her rear-facing car seat, and climbed into the driver’s seat.
She locked all four doors, put the car in reverse, and accelerated down the private mile-long driveway, leaving the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate behind forever.
She didn't stop at the bank. She didn't return to the penthouse in Manhattan.
She drove south on Interstate 95, watching the afternoon sun dip beneath the treeline, her hand resting reassuringly over Lily’s little knee.

""We’re safe now, Lily-bug,"" Emma murmured into the quiet car. ""Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.""
