Chapter 13: An Unassailable Decree

On July 24, the Albemarle County Family Court issued its final, unappealable decree in *Sterling v. Sterling*.
Judge Eleanor Harrison signed the golden-sealed order:
* Emma was granted **Permanent Sole Legal and Sole Physical Custody** of Lily.
* Ryan’s parental rights were permanently terminated under statutory provisions of aggravated domestic violence.
* Emma’s maiden name was legally restored: **Dr. Emma Nolan**.
* Lily’s legal name was permanently registered as **Lily Clara Nolan**.
* All intellectual property rights, publishing contracts, and the *Whispering Orchard* estate were declared Emma’s unencumbered separate property.
As Emma, Caleb, and Dr. Elena Vance walked down the historic granite steps of the courthouse into the summer sunshine, Elena handed Emma the certified decree.
""It is finished, Emma,"" Elena smiled through tears, wrapping her arm around her friend. ""You gave your daughter an unshakeable life.""
Emma held the paper against her heart, looking up at the towering oaks surrounding the courthouse square.
