Chapter 4

The man who stepped through the shattered oak doors did not look like a bankrupt exile. Arthur Vance wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit that smelled faintly of expensive tobacco and old paper. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his sharp gray eyes swept over the blood-stained ballroom with the cold, absolute authority of an apex predator who had reclaimed his domain.
Julian’s jaw dropped, color vanishing entirely from his face until he looked like a corpse standing upright. "Arthur... no. That's impossible. The private plane over the Alps... the wreckage..."
Arthur stopped ten feet away, his gaze locking onto the pale scars visible across Lyra’s bare shoulder and back where her dress had been torn away. A muscle twitched in Arthur’s jaw—the only sign of the incandescent rage simmering beneath his polished exterior.
"You spent five years playing lord of the manor with stolen assets, Julian, while starving my daughter and using her as a punching bag to satisfy your psychopathic impulses," Arthur said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the marble floor. "Did you truly believe my security team wouldn't leave a breadcrumb trail for me to follow?"
Lyra walked over to her father, standing quietly by his side. Arthur placed a protective, heavy hand over her uninjured shoulder, gently pulling her closer.
"Arthur, listen to me," Julian stammered, dropping his pistol as the tactical agents closed in, slamming him face-first onto the floor and pinning him with their combat boots. "It was a business merger! Clara suggested the disciplinary measures to keep her compliant! We can make a deal—I have fifty million in Swiss holdings—"
"Fifty million dollars that belonged to my late wife’s charitable foundation," Arthur interrupted, gesturing with two fingers to the lead tactical commander. "Seize every asset, freeze every account, and audit every shell corporation connected to Vance Global and the Sterling family. I want their holdings reduced to zero by sunrise."
"Yes, sir," the commander replied crisply, hauling Julian to his feet by his expensive collar and dragging him toward the exit.
Julian thrashed wildly, screaming obscenities as the heavy doors began to swing shut, sealing his fate. "You can't do this! The board will never allow it! The government will—"

The massive oak doors slammed shut with a final, echoing thud, cutting off his frantic shrieks and plunging the ballroom into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Arthur turned his attention to the cowering socialites huddled against the velvet drapes, his gray eyes sweeping over them like a freezing winter wind.
