Chapter 11

The private elevator descended smoothly into the subterranean sub-basement of the Vance Estate, a windowless chamber carved directly out of the granite bedrock beneath the Hudson River valley. The air down here was cold, dry, and smelled faintly of ozone and old steel.

Arthur slid the heavy brass key into the mechanical override slot of the primary vault door, while Lyra punched a six-digit numerical sequence into the digital keypad—her mother’s birthday, combined with the date they had planted the false evidence trail for Julian and Marcus.

With a deep, mechanical groan that vibrated through the floorboards, the three-foot-thick steel door swung open, revealing rows of safety deposit boxes and stacks of parchment documents sealed in archival polyester sleeves.

"This is it," Arthur said, stepping into the vault and shining his tactical flashlight across the rows of metal boxes. "Every offshore account, every hidden land deed, and every political payoff ledger from the past forty years."

Lyra walked past the monetary records, her fingers trailing over a small, velvet-lined compartment in the far corner of the vault. Inside sat a heavy silver music box carved with intricate ivy patterns—the exact music box her mother used to play for her every night before the tragic night in Zurich.

She lifted the lid, and a delicate, haunting lullaby drifted through the cold subterranean chamber, echoing off the granite walls.

"She left it here waiting for me," Lyra murmured, her eyes glistening with unshed tears that she quickly blinked away. She refused to cry; she had survived too much to waste tears on ghosts now.

Arthur knelt beside a floor safe hidden beneath a loose marble tile, pulling out a thick stack of blue-ribboned certificates. "These are the original deeds to Vance Global and all its subsidiaries, registered solely in your mother's maiden name. Julian and Marcus never actually owned a single share. Their entire empire was built on a legal fiction."

Lyra looked down at the music box, noticing a small false bottom inside the mechanism. She pressed her thumb against the brass latch, and the wooden base clicked open, revealing a micro-cassette tape and a handwritten note bearing the Vance family crest.

She pulled the note out, unfolding it carefully. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the first sentence aloud.

"What does it say?" Arthur asked, standing up and shining his light over her shoulder.

Lyra swallowed hard, her voice barely audible above the tinkling notes of the music box. "It says: 'The man who ordered the assassination in Zurich is still sitting on the federal oversight board.'"

Before Arthur could process the warning, the heavy steel door of the underground vault slammed shut behind them with a deafening crash, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
