Chapter 11

The heavy mahogany doors of the courtroom shuddered under the impact of a coordinated battering ram. With a resounding crash, the reinforced timber gave way, splintering inward as a tactical team of federal marshals—wearing standard-issue blue uniforms rather than corporate black—poured into the room. Weapons drawn and scanning for threats, the team leader quickly assessed the flooded floor, the shivering spectators, the beaten corporate executive, and the solitary female mercenary standing calmly in the center.
"Drop your weapon! Hands where we can see them!" the lead marshal shouted, sweeping his rifle barrel toward Elena.
Elena did not reach for her sidearm. Instead, she raised her hands slowly, palms open, maintaining steady, natural eye contact with the officer. She offered no resistance, exhibiting the disciplined restraint of a professional who knew when a tactical confrontation was no longer necessary.
Judge Vance immediately stepped forward, raising her hand to halt the advancing marshals before a miscommunication could trigger a tragedy. "Lower your weapons, officer. This operator secured the premises and prevented the destruction of critical evidence."
The lead marshal hesitated, lowering his rifle slightly as he recognized the federal judge standing in soaked judicial robes. He glanced toward Marcus Sterling, who was still slumped against the witness box, staring vacantly at the massive public monitors that were still broadcasting financial ledgers of corruption to the outside world.
"Your Honor, we received an automated emergency broadcast routed from this courtroom," the marshal reported, keeping a wary eye on Elena. "Half the municipal servers in the capital are locked down by an unidentifiable data packet. Command ordered us to secure the site immediately."
"You arrived right on time, Marshal," Judge Vance said, her voice steady and commanding. She pointed a finger directly at the corporate executive on the floor. "Arrest Marcus Sterling. Charge him with conspiracy, treason, and the illegal execution of American citizens under Project Aegis. The evidence is on my desk."
The marshal nodded, signaling two of his subordinates to secure Sterling. The corporate executive offered no struggle as the heavy steel handcuffs were clicked into place around his wrists. He was hauled roughly to his feet, his tailored dark suit ruined by water and mud, his head bowed as he was led past the gallery of staring spectators toward the shattered exit doors.

As Sterling passed Elena, he paused for a fraction of a second, lifting his gaze to meet hers one last time. There was no anger left in his eyes, only a cold, tired realization. "You can't outrun the apparatus forever, Vance," he muttered quietly.
"I don't need to outrun it," Elena replied softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the room. "I just need to outlast it."
