Chapter 1

The heavy mahogany doors of the Federal District Court remained sealed, locking out the frantic murmur of the press corps outside. Inside, the atmosphere was dense with the collective holding of breath. Elena Vance, thirty years old, stood at the center of the well-appointed chamber. Her black tactical vest and reinforced combat uniform bore the scuffs of a long deployment, standing in stark contrast to the polished marble floors and traditional wood paneling. Her hair was pulled back tightly, framing a face devoid of cosmetic pretense, marked only by the quiet focus of a veteran operator who had calculated every variable in the room.
Opposite her stood Marcus Sterling, forty-five, towering over the podium in a tailored dark suit and a fine black turtleneck. His expression was a mask of cold corporate authority, cultivated over decades of managing state secrets and illicit corporate acquisitions. He had spoken the first words that broke the silence, his voice a measured baritone designed to project absolute jurisdiction.
"You’re trespassing, mercenary," Sterling had stated, stepping forward as if physical presence alone could command obedience from someone who lived outside the law.
Elena had not flinched. When Sterling closed the distance, attempting to block her path to the bench, she did not hesitate. Her movement was economical, born of muscle memory and absolute tactical necessity. A swift, controlled redirection of his momentum sent the tall man crashing hard against the polished floor.
"Stay on the ground," Elena said, her voice dropping into a stern, flat register that brooked no argument.
High above them, Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to the operator, though the shared surname had once sparked whispers in intelligence corridors—struck her heavy wooden gavel. The sound cracked through the vaulted ceiling like a gunshot. The judge, fifty years old with her blonde hair pinned into a severe bun, leaned over her mahogany bench, her face flushed with a mixture of shock and incandescent fury.

"Officer, release him now!" Judge Vance demanded, pointing a trembling finger toward the defense table as court security scrambled to respond.
Yet, before the first bailiff could cross the room, Elena bypassed the fallen corporate executive entirely. Her hand shot out, snatching a restricted white folder bearing a bold red classification stamp from the edge of the clerk's desk. With a fluid motion, she dropped the folder open directly before the judge, exposing the raw truth inside.
