Chapter 9

By mid-morning, Margaret was back at the Pentagon, sitting in the secure briefing room adjacent to General Harrison’s office. The air smelled of ozone and hot electronics from the secure servers humming in the corner. General Harrison stood by the whiteboard, pinning up a complex organizational chart that linked Arthur’s shell corporations to several high-ranking civilian procurement officials within the Department of Defense.
Harrison tapped a red marker against the board, turning to face Margaret with a solemn expression. He informed her that while Arthur’s arrest had disrupted the immediate supply chain leak, external pressure from civilian defense contractors was already mounting behind the scenes. Powerful lobbyists were attempting to frame the investigation as a rogue internal dispute to protect corporate stock prices and prevent congressional oversight hearings.
Margaret listened intently, her pen poised over her notepad. She noted that the political blowback would inevitably target her military career, as critics sought to undermine her credibility by dredging up minor administrative infractions from her past deployments. Harrison made it clear that command leadership fully supported her actions, but cautioned her that the upcoming formal inquiry would be grueling, public, and intensely personal.

He asked her if she wanted to take an administrative leave of absence until the preliminary hearings concluded, offering her a quiet desk assignment overseas where the media spotlight could not reach her. Margaret looked up from her notes, her expression firm and unyielding. She declined the offer without hesitation, stating that running away from the scrutiny would only validate the false narratives her brother's associates were trying to construct.
Harrison smiled faintly, a gesture of genuine respect crossing his weathered features. He dismissed her with a final directive to prepare her formal testimony for the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing scheduled for the following week. As Margaret stood up, saluting crisply before turning toward the door, she knew she was walking directly into the crosshairs of a political firestorm that would test every ounce of her endurance and moral fiber.
