Chapter 2

Margaret brought the blue phone to her ear, blocking out Arthur’s frantic pacing with the sheer force of her concentration. She listened intently to the low, steady breathing on the other end of the line before speaking with absolute authority. She warned Major Bennett not to sign anything Arthur had placed in front of him, exposing the breadth of her brother's corporate conspiracy in a few carefully chosen sentences. Arthur spun around, his face draining of color as he realized she was cutting the legs out from under his multi-million dollar defense subcontracting scam in real time.

Arthur lunged forward, demanding to know who was on the line, but Margaret ignored him entirely. She terminated the call with a soft click, sliding the phone back into her pocket with chilling calm. Eleanor remained seated, her hands clasped tightly over her lap, the pearls around her neck clicking softly against one another as she shivered. The tension in the room thickened until it felt almost physical, a palpable barrier separating the siblings into opposing camps.

Arthur’s hands trembled slightly as he grabbed the edge of the table again. His immaculate appearance was beginning to fray, the polished facade cracking under the pressure of imminent exposure. He had spent months convincing investors that his partnership with military suppliers was entirely legitimate, leveraging family connections to secure classified logistics pathways. Margaret had discovered the ledger discrepancies three weeks ago during an audit of her unit's supply chain management, tracing the fraudulent billing directly back to Arthur’s shell corporations.

Eleanor finally found her voice, speaking softly into the charged space. She reminded them both that the Hale family name had survived scandals far worse than corporate greed, but her words lacked conviction. She knew that a court-martial combined with federal fraud charges would obliterate everything they had built. Margaret stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of her uniform jacket. She looked down at her mother with a mixture of sorrow and resolve, refusing to compromise her oath to the service for the sake of family preservation.

Arthur realized that emotional appeals were useless. He shifted tactics, his voice dropping into a dangerous, conspiratorial whisper as he warned her that destroying him would bring down the entire family's assets, including her own pension and their mother’s estate. Margaret looked him dead in the eye, stepping away from the table. She walked toward the heavy double doors of the parlor, leaving the champagne and the fraudulent documents behind. The exit was not an admission of defeat, but the opening salvo in a war that would play out far beyond the walls of this estate.
