Chapter 3

As the evening shadows lengthened across the suburban lawn, casting long, skeletal patterns through the living room windows, Arthur finally turned his attention back to the mahogany console table. Eleanor’s designer leather handbag sat there like a ticking parcel. He knew he had no legal right to rifle through her personal belongings, but the frantic urgency in her eyes just before she fled suggested that the bag contained something far more incriminating than mere makeup and house keys.
Lily had fallen asleep on the sofa, exhausted from the emotional turbulence of the day. Her yellow dress was slightly rumpled, and the white pearl earrings she wore caught the amber glow of the floor lamp. Margaret had retired to her upstairs study, the door clicking shut with a dry, final sound.
Arthur unclasped the brass lock of the handbag. Inside, he found the expected assortment of cosmetics, a sleek smartphone, and a leather-bound planner. But nestled at the bottom was a thick manila envelope tied with a pink ribbon. His fingers trembled slightly as he untied the ribbon and slid the contents onto the entryway table.
Staring back at him were dozens of printed photographs. They weren't romantic pictures of Eleanor and him, nor were they casual snapshots of neighborhood gatherings. They were surveillance photos—taken from angles inside the house that only someone living there could access. Shots of Lily eating breakfast alone at the counter while Eleanor rolled her eyes in the background. Shots of Arthur’s office building downtown, captured from a parked car across the street. And worst of all, explicit financial documents bearing his mother’s signature alongside Eleanor’s, outlining a complex legal maneuver to declare Arthur an unfit father and petition for full custody of Lily, with Margaret listed as the primary guardian.
The conspiracy was breathtaking in its depth and coldness. Margaret hadn't just tolerated Eleanor’s cruelty; she had financed it, plotting to strip Arthur of his parental rights so she could raise Lily according to her own strict, unyielding standards. The white pearl necklace Margaret wore every day suddenly felt less like an heirloom and more like a badge of a secret syndicate.

Arthur felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He picked up the smartphone from the bag. It buzzed instantly in his palm, lighting up with a preview notification from a messaging thread labeled 'M. & E. Alliance.' The most recent message, sent just three minutes ago from a number he recognized as his mother’s, read: He took the bait with the bowl. Proceed with the emergency custody filing in the morning. The neighborhood will believe the abuse narrative if we leak the bruises we staged last week.
Staged bruises. The memory of Lily flinching when Eleanor reached out to adjust her collar last Tuesday flashed through Arthur’s mind. They hadn't been accidental bumps; they had been deliberate marks, cataloged and photographed to build a dossier against him.
